Silk History in a Former Factory

Abbadia Lariana combines cultural history with paths through the landscape. The Civico Museo Setificio Monti presents evidence of the area's historic silk production in an authentic former silk factory from the 19th century. The former production process is particularly vividly illustrated by a circular silk-twisting machine from 1818: it is almost 5 metres wide, 11 metres high and still operational. Since 2007, the museum has promoted educational tours and interactive learning activities. This gives the industrial past a tangible, understandable place in your stay.

San Lorenzo on the Lakeside Promenade

The cultural history of the town also includes the church of San Lorenzo. It was built in the 13th century at the instigation of the Ordine dei Padri Serviti, the Order of the Servite Fathers, on the remains of the antica Abbazia Benedettina. Today, San Lorenzo stands on the lakeside promenade of Abbadia Lariana, just a few steps from Lake Como. The historic building and its location by the water make this part of the town interesting if you would like to combine architecture, history and walks.

Hikes between Stages and a Waterfall

For longer excursions, the Sentiero del Viandante provides a clearly structured framework. The trail is 45 kilometres long and can be walked in four stages of an average of four hours each. You can take on the entire route as a multi-day hike or plan individual sections into your trip. Another option leads to the Cascata del Cenghen: the route follows a mule track and an easy, undemanding hiking trail and is suitable for everyone, including children. The Cascata del Cenghen has a drop of 50 metres.

Organising Partial Sections by Train

The towns around the lake are connected by railway lines. This means that you can also walk only part of the Sentiero del Viandante and return to the starting point by train. This connection is particularly useful if you do not want to commit to a complete route for your hike. In this way, you can combine culture in Abbadia Lariana, a shorter section of the trail and other places around the lake at your own pace.

Beaches, Parks and Further Cultural Destinations

The lakeside promenade of Abbadia Lariana has beaches and parks with equipped green spaces. Showers, toilets, a bar and children's play areas are available there. The Museo Moto Guzzi, a museum, is also located in the immediate vicinity of Abbadia Lariana. Palazzo Secchi, a palace, is also in the surrounding area. The range therefore extends from silk production through sacred history and historic architecture to walks, a waterfall and the lakeshore.

If you would like to compare more places, here is a concise selection: Bindo, Vestreno, Brivio, Onno, Introbio, Suello, Fiumelatte and Malgrate.
