Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; it also has a single-nave layout and a barrel vault. The year 1169 is significantly earlier than the construction years of the mausoleum.

The Cappella di San Giuseppe was established in the 18th century as a private chapel for the owners of the Villa of the Counts Romagnoli in Campiasciutti. It still exists today as part of the institute of the Padri Guanelliani. Its former association with the villa and its present affiliation with the institute mark two different periods of its history.
