Bagnolo San Vito combines archaeology, church architecture, water management, outdoor activities and regional cuisine to create a diverse travel experience. The sights range from educational activities at the Forcello Archaeological Park to historic buildings and gardens in the surrounding area. This allows you to discover culture and landscape with different focuses.
Archaeology and Local History
At the Forcello Archaeological Park, educational workshops and experimental reconstructions are the main attractions. These include kilns for pottery production and a fully reconstructed Etruscan house. The port city of Forcello was active from the 6th to the 4th century BC. From March to October, the park is open on public holidays according to the events calendar available online; groups of 18 or more people can visit it daily by reservation made at least two days in advance.
Churches, Water Management and Historic Buildings
The present-day parish church of Chiesa di San Biagio was built between 1764 and 1780, replacing an earlier church dating from the 14th century. Next to it is the football pitch where the living nativity play Notte di luce is held during the Christmas and Easter holidays.
The Travata pumping station on the Mincio River was built between 1924 and 1928. This structure, dating from the period between 1920 and 1930, bears witness to the millennia-old struggle of the river inhabitants with the water and can drain and irrigate 10,000 hectares of land.
Villa Riva Berni is a 17th-century building with two large staircases at the entrance. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina displays old agricultural tools and carts, arranged according to the areas of work, learning, play and leisure.
Cycle Path, Gardens and Excursions
A cycling and walking route begins in the center of Bagnolo San Vito and runs through fields and along the Gherardo Canal to San Biagio and Forcello.
The surrounding area of Bagnolo San Vito also includes Palazzo Soardi, the Fruttiere di Palazzo Te Museum, Palazzo Te and Palazzo Valenti Gonzaga. The Giardini di Piazza Anconetta, Giardini Marani, Giardini di Piazza Lega Lombarda and Giardini Valentini are also located nearby.
Regional Cuisine
Typical dishes of the area include Tortelli di zucca. You can try these pumpkin tortelli in the restaurants and trattorias of the municipality of Bagnolo San Vito. This local specialty complements the town's historical and landscape-related attractions.
The combination of archaeology, water management and everyday culture gives your stay several thematic focuses. When choosing your hotel, you can therefore consider whether you primarily want to experience the Archaeological Park and historic buildings or include the cycling and walking route, fields and water management in your itinerary.
