Castellaro Lagusello: Fortified Village, Lake and Moraine Landscape

Castellaro Lagusello is a fortified village near a small lake of glacial moraine origin. The castle defines the village’s appearance; at the same time, medieval defensive architecture, Bronze Age settlement history and moraine-shaped nature come together here. Fortified Village with Medieval Architecture

“Castellaro Lagusello – Fondo Tacoli” is connected as component 1363-098 with the World Heritage Site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps”. Castellaro Lagusello Castle dates from the period 1100–1200 and was built at the behest of the Scaligeri, the lords of Verona, to defend the area.

The castle complex still includes the almost intact ring of walls, four towers, several sections of the battlement walk and two medieval rustic houses. The Torre Campanaria di Castellaro Lagusello is approximately 24 metres high. The bell tower contains five richly decorated bronze bells, all dating from between the mid-18th and the beginning of the 19th century. From its top, there are views across the surrounding moraine hills, the heart-shaped lake and the village.

Pile-Dwelling History and Villa Arrighi

On the western shore of the lake, a Bronze Age pile-dwelling settlement stood at Fondo Tacoli; a second one was located on the eastern shore at Fondo Pezzalunga. Fondo Tacoli was continuously inhabited from the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age through advanced phases of the Late Bronze Age, from the 16th to the 13th century BC. These two shore areas add a significantly older historical layer to the medieval history of the village.

Villa Arrighi still has a battlement walk along its garden, offering impressive views of the lake. Napoleon Bonaparte stayed overnight at Villa Arrighi twice in 1796 and again in 1859, immediately after the Battle of Solferino.

Moraine Hills, Wetland and Birdlife

The Site of Community Importance (SCI) “Complesso Morenico di Castellaro Lagusello” covers 271 hectares of areas of natural interest on the moraine hills of Monzambano and Cavriana. The Riserva Regionale Complesso Morenico di Castellaro Lagusello is home to more than 50 breeding bird species, including great crested grebes, little bitterns, penduline tits and “cannaiola verdognola”. This creates a nature theme for your planning that is closely connected with the lake, hills and wetland.

Practical Orientation and Routes

The lake is accessible through the gate at Via Castello 49, 46040 Castellaro Lagusello MN. There is no admission fee to enter the village of Castellaro Lagusello. Ciclovia 6 – Corridoio morenico alto is a 20.8-kilometre circular cycling route through Cavriana, Castellaro Lagusello, Monzambano and Ponti sul Mincio.

Other routes lead on foot along unpaved paths towards Monte Tondo and along trails through downy oak or Turkey oak forests. A path created by the park approaches the wetland, running partly along an unpaved track and partly on a wooden boardwalk. Depending on whether you mainly want to experience the village on foot, by bicycle or through its historic buildings, you can plan different daily rhythms.

Flower Market and Village Events

At the end of April, the “I Fiori di Castellaro” flower market brings Castellaro Lagusello to life. From June to September, the first Saturday of each month is dedicated to the “Sabato del Borgo”. As part of the “Sabato del Borgo”, night-time visits to the Riserva di Castellaro were possible.
