Castiglione Delle Stiviere: Gonzaga Heritage and Moraine Landscape

Castiglione Delle Stiviere combines religious heritage, Gonzaga history, humanitarian remembrance and a distinctive moraine landscape. The Basilica Santuario di San Luigi Gonzaga, several museums, the Convento di Santa Maria and the SIC Complesso Morenico di Castiglione delle Stiviere offer different ways to discover the town. The thematic range extends from pilgrimage and sacred art to humanitarian remembrance, Roman traces and paths through the moraine hills.

Pilgrimage and Gonzaga History

The Basilica Santuario di San Luigi Gonzaga was elevated to the status of a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI in 1964. It houses a relic of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga and is also a pilgrimage destination. The Museo Aloisiano preserves important works of sacred art connected with Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. These include a significant portrait cycle of the Gonzaga family from the younger branch of the family represented in Castiglione.

Visits to the Museo Aloisiano are exclusively by prior reservation; a guided tour is also provided.

Humanitarian Remembrance and Local Art

The Museo Internazionale della Croce Rossa opened on 24 June 1959 in the Palazzo Longhi, exactly one century after the Battle of Solferino. The museum is regarded as a place that conveys the history of humanitarian work from its origins to the present day. The Museo Internazionale della Croce Rossa also preserves the original text of Henry Dunant’s book “Un ricordo di Solferino,” written in 1862. The gallery in the Palazzo Menghini permanently displays the exhibition “Segno e identità di una Comunità. Grandi artisti del Novecento castiglionese.”

Historical Traces at the Convento di Santa Maria

The Convento di Santa Maria was built in the 16th century as a country residence of the Gonzaga family. In 1584, Luigi Gonzaga withdrew to the Convento di Santa Maria to pray. A black-and-white mosaic floor from the 1st or 2nd century AD has re-emerged at the Roman villa of the Convento di Santa Maria. The Roman villa also includes a circular underground room measuring approximately six metres in diameter, with an ancient spring, which is considered a thermal hall. Here, the historical connections extend from the Gonzaga period back to the Roman era.

Moraine Hills, Forests and Trails

Within the town, the SIC Complesso Morenico di Castiglione delle Stiviere covers 115.75 hectares. It includes Turkey oak forests on the slopes, riparian willow woods, remnants of dry meadows on predominantly south-facing, sunny and steep slopes, as well as the Valle wetland with riparian and marsh vegetation. The SIC can be accessed via hiking trails and local roads.

The Mantuan section of the Via Carolingia also begins in Castiglione delle Stiviere, passes through the moraine hills and continues to the Convento di Santa Maria.
