Between the Naviglio Grande and the Ticino

Boffalora Sopra Ticino combines waterways, a cultivated cultural landscape shaped over time and a rich history. The Naviglio Grande crosses the central part of the town, while the Ticino River runs along the outskirts of Boffalora Sopra Ticino. The town lies within the Parco Lombardo della Valle del Ticino. In the western part of the Valle del Ticino, cultivated fields and wooded areas extending to the Ticino River shape the landscape.

History by the Water

The first settlement in Boffalora Sopra Ticino can be traced back to the years 1180 to 1190, when construction began on the Naviglio Grande. The “Cornice” water intake on the Naviglio played an important role. It was first mentioned in 1346, belonged to the noble Crivelli family and was of great importance for the use of water in agriculture, crafts and industry.

The Barchètt also represents the former connection across the canal. It was a river transport service on the Naviglio that connected Boffalora Sopra Ticino with Milan. The Barchètt has been documented since 1645 and operated until the beginning of the 20th century. The building and ruling history also includes Villa Giulini and its surrounding English garden, which Count Giorgio Giulini had built around the middle of the 18th century. The Santuario dell’Acquanera preserves the marker indicating the water level reached by the Ticino during the 1868 flood. The Grangia dei Certosini was built by the Carthusians of Pavia; it was not until 1750 that they became feudal lords there and gave agriculture a major boost.

Palazzo Cattaneo is a palace in the area surrounding Boffalora Sopra Ticino. Visconteo Castle and Castello Sforzesco are also located nearby, both classified as castles. Villa Ottolini-Tovaglieri is a palace in the wider regional area.

Nature Areas and Excursions on the Water

Boffalora Sopra Ticino lies within three areas of significant natural importance: the La Fagiana and Turbigaccio woodlands, the Castelletto woodlands and the Lanca di Bernate. These areas are classified as a Zona di protezione speciale for their flora and fauna. A mini-cruise departs from the Boffalora Sopra Ticino landing stage at Piazza IV Giugno, travels via Bernate Ticino to the village of Rubone and then returns to Boffalora Sopra Ticino.
