Varedo: Villa Architecture, Churches and Lombard Heritage

Varedo combines Lombard villa architecture, ecclesiastical architecture, industrial history and landscape connections to create a varied townscape. Particularly distinctive is Villa Bagatti Valsecchi: it was built in 1878 on the foundations of an existing 18th-century farmhouse. Its park covers approximately 64,500 square metres and provides the spatial setting for several noteworthy features of the estate.

Villa Bagatti Valsecchi and its historic avenue

The perspective avenue of Villa Bagatti Valsecchi is 1,347.70 metres long and 35 metres wide overall. It dates from 1881 and was designed by the engineer Domenico Laveni. The villa's portico is supported by 24 white granite columns. Aligned with the villa and the avenue is a fountain with a concave-elliptical basin. The basin covers an area of 121.38 square metres and has a central water jet.

Smaller features also tell of the site's historic design. The ice-house complex in the park of Villa Bagatti Valsecchi is the only surviving one of five facilities documented in Varedo. The historic avenue at the villa is considered the most important area of historical and artistic value in GruBrìa Park. Churches with their own distinctive character

The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo is a building in the Lombard Neo-Gothic style, designed by the architect Giuseppe Bagatti Valsecchi. Its façade features a large rose window with a profiled terracotta surround. The altar bears four silver busts of saints as well as white marble statues of Saints Peter and Paul. Here, architecture, materials and furnishings can be viewed directly as a cohesive design.

In the Valera district, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Annunciata stands on Provincial Road 132 towards Desio. The church dates from the 17th century. Its interior comprises a rectangular liturgical hall with a barrel-vaulted ceiling area.

Villa Agnesi is closely associated with the memory of the scientist, humanist and philanthropist Maria Gaetana Agnesi. This connection broadens the cultural perspective on Varedo beyond architectural forms and park design.

Industrial history and landscape

The viscose plant in Varedo is also part of the area's historical profile. It was established in 1924 under the name “S.A. Seta Artificiale Varedo” and was given the name SNIA in 1927. A contrast in the landscape is provided by the agricultural area between Varedo, Desio and Nova Milanese. Beneath Viale Brianza there is a wildlife passage for small animals.
