Corbetta: Villas, Sanctuary and Rural Landscapes

Corbetta combines artistic historic buildings, religious culture and rural landscapes. The historic centre is home to several “ville di delizia”. Their façades face the inhabited Borgo, while their parks open out towards the surrounding countryside. Many farmsteads in the area date back to the 18th century and feature the courtyard layout characteristic of the Lombard irrigation plain.

Historic Villas and Special Interiors

One of the most prominent buildings is Villa Frisiani Mereghetti. It was built around 1652 by Gottardo Frisiani and designed by Francesco Maria Richini. In Palazzo Brentano, the main rooms are decorated with frescoes and stucco from the second half of the 18th century. Together, these two sites represent different forms of historic architecture in Corbetta.

Casa di Carlo Alberto Pisani Dossi was built around the middle of the 15th century by Count Ambrogio Varese di Rosate. It houses an archaeological collection featuring finds from the Iron and Bronze Ages, Roman oil lamps, so-called Cappuccina tombs, as well as medieval and early modern artefacts. Those interested in the region’s long history will therefore find exhibits here from several periods.

The Sanctuary and Religious History

The museum of the Santuario della Beata Vergine dei Miracoli provides an overview of more than 500 years of church history through numerous finely decorated chapels. On the upper floor there is an oratory containing the fresco of the Madonna di Corbetta, who is said to have appeared on 17 April 1555. The Camere di San Carlo also preserve original furnishings used by San Carlo Borromeo during his numerous visits to Corbetta towards the end of the 16th century, including a four-poster bed.

Rural Surroundings and Special Occasions

The more rural outskirts and districts are home to fontanili, fields, green spaces and farmsteads. The park of Villa Frisiani Olivares Ferrario provides a distinctive feature with an artificial lake and a great variety of tree species. As part of its ecological redesign, the grotto was restored and the atmospheric lake was made navigable.

The traditional “Passeggiata tra le ville” takes place every year on the first Sunday in May. On this occasion, gardens, historic palaces and churches open their doors to visitors. The Festa del Perdono is always celebrated on the Thursday after Easter and commemorates the miracle that took place on 17 April 1555. These two dates highlight different aspects of architecture, local history and religious tradition.

Corbetta can be reached in just a few minutes by train via Corbetta railway station. When planning your trip, you can therefore experience the historic buildings in the centre, the Sanctuary and the more rural areas of the town as distinct cultural and landscape facets of a stay.
