Discover Morimondo: Abbey, Museums and Paths Through the Green Landscape

Morimondo combines monastic history with museums, rural paths and regional cycling experiences. Here, you can combine sacred art and medieval architecture with a short route through woodland and cultivated landscapes. The town also offers various points of interest for a trip focused on history or for a section of the Via Francisca del Lucomagno.

Abbey, Church Architecture and Museums

Morimondo Abbey was founded in 1134 by Cistercian monks from the French abbey of Morimond. Construction of the abbey church began in 1182 and was completed in 1296. Notable details include the wooden choir stalls with 70 walnut inlay seats, crafted by Francesco Giramo by 1522. A visit therefore leads directly from the abbey’s origins to the fine craftsmanship found in the church interior.

The Museo dell'Abbazia is dedicated to researching and presenting Cistercian monasticism. Its themes include architecture, art, miniature painting and the transformation of the surrounding territory. The museum’s former dormitory displays Lombard wooden sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Civico Museo Angelo Comolli preserves works by the Liberty-style artist and fresco painter Angelo Comolli; its collection consists mainly of large preparatory cartoons for figurative decorations.

A guided visit lasting around 30 minutes is required to visit the Civico Museo Angelo Comolli. The Museo d'Arte Sacra presents themes from faith, art and tradition across 1,500 square metres. Its displays include 42 dioramas, all of which come from Santa Maria alle Grazie. Depending on your interests, you can explore monastic history, painting, wood sculpture and sacred representations through a range of different museum collections.

Educational Trail and Cultivated Landscape

The Parco del Ticino presents the Sentiero Morimondo – Percorso tra storia e agricoltura as an educational trail approximately 2.7 kilometres long. The route passes through a small area of woodland with vegetation typical of the forests of the Parco del Ticino. The trail also includes observing and analysing the rice, maize and cereal crops found along the way. Significant areas of marcite meadows can still be found today near Morimondo Abbey.

The Sentiero Morimondo starts and ends near the car park at the Morimondo cemetery. Returning to the starting area makes the route easy to plan as an independent nature and landscape section, without losing its thematic connection between history and agriculture.

Cycle Routes and Historical Events

Near the abbey, the Naviglio di Bereguardo has a paved, easy-to-ride section of the cycle path. For longer bike tours, the Ciclabile del Ticino is also relevant: this protected cycle path runs for approximately 98 kilometres between Sesto Calende and Pavia. This allows you to consider a short local cycling stage and a considerably longer route as different travel options.

Trecentesca is an international event dedicated to historical reconstruction of the Middle Ages. It is set in the Visconti era and is connected with the Battle of Casorate. Since May 2015, Trecentesca has been offered in two formats: in even-numbered years, there is the full edition with military camps and a battle reenactment; in odd-numbered years, there is the shorter edition, “Aspettando Trecentesca – Giornate Trecentesche”, focusing on everyday scenes and medieval crafts.

Morimondo as a Stage Point

On the seventh stage of the Via Francisca del Lucomagno, Morimondo is the first point of interest reached after seven kilometres on foot. This also allows you to consider the town in connection with a longer pilgrimage stage, alongside the independent cultural and nature experiences around the abbey, museums and educational trail.
