Robecco sul Naviglio – Churches, Villas and the Naviglio Grande

Robecco sul Naviglio combines local history with the character of the Naviglio Grande. Churches, historic villas, bridges and the La Fagiana Nature Reserve offer different ways to discover the town. Robecco is especially vivid where architectural history and the waterscape meet: in the historic centre, along the canal and on an excursion that takes in paths, villas and the towpath. This allows you to combine your hotel stay with culture and independent exploration.

Churches and Architectural History

The Church of San Giovanni Battista was consecrated in 1789. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; during the extensive remodelling in 1901, it was changed from a Greek cross to a Latin cross and the façade was built. A further consecration followed in 1902. The architectural design also includes a projecting apse and a large dome over pendentives.

The Church of San Francesco was built by the heirs of the nobleman Guidone Pietrasanta in accordance with his testamentary instruction of 3 April 1310. It contains an altarpiece depicting the Stigmatisation of Saint Francis, attributed to Marcantonio Mainardi (il Chiaveghino). Together, the two churches provide different historical reference points in the town's history.

At the Naviglio Grande: Bridges and Paths

The Ponte degli Scalini was built in 1842 to connect the former districts of Brisa and San Girolamo; it is also a small pedestrian bridge over the Naviglio Grande. Along the Naviglio Grande in Robecco sul Naviglio runs a road spanned by iron bridges, with cobblestones worn smooth by generations. These features give an exploration along the water a clear architectural and historical context.

Another view of the town is offered by the excursion “Robecco sul Naviglio, un paese fra le acque”. It leads through the historic centre between the villas di delizia and along the towpath beside the Naviglio. The excursion is available by prior reservation; the route includes visits to Palazzo Archinto and Villa Gaia, also by prior reservation.

Palazzo Archinto and Villa Gromo di Ternengo

Palazzo Archinto currently houses the municipal library and the local Museo del Naviglio Grande. Villa Gromo di Ternengo is privately owned; the Pro Loco regularly organises tours by appointment. When planning your day, you can take these different uses into account: Palazzo Archinto is defined by its current municipal and museum functions, while tours of the villa are organised by appointment.

La Fagiana and the Surrounding Natural Area

The La Fagiana Nature Reserve lies mainly within the municipality of Magenta and partly in Boffalora Ticino and Robecco sul Naviglio. Its natural setting therefore extends beyond Robecco, while the town itself remains connected with churches, villas and the Naviglio Grande.
