Discover San Carlo: Hiking, Bike Routes and Culture

San Carlo is a place with a variety of routes through forests, valleys and natural landscapes. Trekking and mountain bike routes start there or lead there, and several peaks are located in the surrounding area. The route to the Church of Presedont and the trail through Val Lia lead from San Carlo through different types of landscape. When planning, the specific route can be taken into account: on foot, the valley floor, forested slopes and paved roads alternate; by mountain bike, reservoirs, singletrack and gravel sections are added.

Hiking between San Carlo and the valleys

The trekking route to the Church of Presedont begins at San Carlo Church and leads down to the valley floor. It follows comfortable paths along the Viola stream through a flat, peaceful natural landscape with typical alpine huts.

The Valle del Foscagno trekking route follows the Strada del Bosco through a densely forested slope and reaches the Decauville, which connects Arnoga with Cancano. Another section of the same route leads from the Centro Sportivo di Semogo along paved road N185 to San Carlo. Near the church, it crosses the Strada Statale del Foscagno. The Sentiero del Conte leads through the Bosco del Conte, which lies opposite the village of San Carlo.

From the village of San Carlo, you can walk via Val Lia or Val Cardonè to the area around Cima Piazzi.

Mountain bike routes with changing surfaces

The Sentiero Viola - Giro del Foscagno - Decauville mountain bike route reaches San Carlo via Via Le Ponti. In the final section of Val Vezzola, this route crosses the reservoir and then continues along a singletrack nestled in the forest.

On the La Val Viola da San Carlo route, the path becomes a gravel track at the Altumeira parking area; the route then climbs to Lago Viola. Numerous bike shuttles also operate in the San Carlo area. Anyone planning a bike tour in San Carlo can treat the change to the gravel track at the Altumeira parking area and the subsequent ascent to Lago Viola as a separate section.

Peaks in the surrounding area

The peak Corno delle Pecore is located in the immediate vicinity of San Carlo. The peaks Corno la Resa, Monte delle Scale and Punta Lago Nero are also located in the San Carlo area.

Churches and regional buildings

San Carlo Church was built following a vow made by the inhabitants of Semogo in 1636, intended to stop the spread of the plague in the Bormio area.
