Biandronno between the lake, art and local history

Biandronno combines the landscape of the lakes with art, archaeology and local history. A section of the Pista ciclopedonale del Lago di Varese, the Lago di Biandronno protected area, Villa Borghi, Isolino Virginia, the Chiesa di San Lorenzo and the Teatro Gualberto Niemen offer different ways of exploring this Italian destination. Lake, cycle path and wetland

The approximately 10-kilometre section of the Pista ciclopedonale del Lago di Varese in Biandronno forms part of the approximately 28-kilometre circular route around Lake Varese. The two approximate lengths help you distinguish the section in Biandronno from the larger loop when planning your own trip. The cycle path section thus provides a specific connection to the landscape of Lake Varese, without implying any particular order for your activities.

The basin of Lago di Biandronno is of post-glacial origin and once belonged to a shared lake system with Lake Varese and Lake Comabbio. In the Lago di Biandronno protected area, the vegetation consists mainly of reeds and sedges. Rare plants such as sundew and marsh violet grow there; typical wetland birds breed there. The landscape can therefore be understood not only through the history of its waters, but also through its plant and bird life.

Villa Borghi and Isolino Virginia

Villa Borghi di Biandronno was built at the beginning of the 19th century on a small hill. It has a large park and offers wide-ranging views of Isolino Virginia and the Monte Rosa range. For permanent public use, Villa Borghi houses the permanent “Collezione del Bianco Lombardo” featuring 25 paintings by Antonio Pedretti. This makes the site a clear cultural focus combining architectural history, parkland, panoramic views and painting.

Isolino Virginia lies a few metres from the western shore of Lake Varese; the island is part of the municipality of Biandronno. At the Museo archeologico “Andrea Ponti”, original finds, reconstructions and immersive displays provide insights into life in the Neolithic period. The most direct connection to Isolino Virginia leads from the landing stage of the municipality of Biandronno on Via Marconi, by the cycle path. Architectural history and theatre

The Chiesa di San Lorenzo also bears the marks of several historical periods. It already existed as a chapel at the end of the 14th century, was later enlarged and altered, and today has a neoclassical design. Its interiors are richly decorated with frescoes. The church brings together its medieval origins, later structural changes and its present-day neoclassical design.

The Teatro Gualberto Niemen is named after a famous puppeteer who spent a large part of his life in Biandronno. It is located in the former headquarters of the Società Operaia Mutuo Soccorso and is housed in an early-20th-century building with an appealing eclectic façade. The theatre opened in 2009 and has 90 seats. In this way, the theatre building combines the memory of its namesake with the building’s former function and architectural character.
