Urban history between theatre and textiles

The Teatro Sociale Delia Cajelli brings together architectural and cultural history in a unique way. It first opened on 27 September 1891 with Verdi’s “La forza del destino.” Designed by Achille Sfondrini, the building follows the model of Milan’s La Scala. Its programme includes performances, concerts, film screenings, festivals, conferences, and educational activities. This makes it possible to discover Busto Arsizio through different forms of cultural life as well.

A second important facet of the city is showcased by the Museo del Tessile. It is located in the former spinning area of the local cotton mill Cotonificio Carlo Ottolini, later Bustese, an important example of industrial archaeology in Busto Arsizio. The exhibition traces the various stages of textile production: from spinning through garment production to shipping. This insight is complemented by a specialist library with technical documents and textile pattern books, as well as an electronic catalogue available for consultation on site.

Green spaces and paths in Parco Alto Milanese

Busto Arsizio is part of the Parco Alto Milanese consortium. The areas southwest of Busto Arsizio’s built-up area are protected, preserved, maintained, and regulated there. In the park, a network of cycling and walking paths connects the various points of interest and is suitable for leisure, sport, and environmental education. The educational pond at Cascinetta, at the park entrance in the Busto Arsizio area, allows visitors to observe aquatic flora and fauna, amphibians, insects, and marsh plants. In this way, the landscape complements the city’s architectural and historical themes with nature observation and physical activity.

Local specialities and festivals

Busto Arsizio’s De.Co. products include Salame prealpino, l’antica coppa bustese, and il lardo contadino bustese. Also associated with the local cuisine are the Bruscitti del Magistero di Busto Grande: this De.Co. preparation is made according to a recipe deposited with a notary.

Several festivals combine food, customs, and special locations. The Festa dell’insalata e ciàpi takes place on Easter Monday at the Madonna in Veroncora. Traditionally, it includes the first field salad with hard-boiled eggs, as well as a skill competition featuring festively decorated horses. The “Coppette” festival at the Madonna in Prato takes place on 8 December and is associated with almond wafers. Following the fire of the Festa della Giubiana, a dinner with risotto and Luganega, meaning sausage, a glass of wine, and conversation is organised in Piazza Einaudi.

Sacred art and the history of the collection

The “Devozione e arte sacra” tour explores the history, architecture, and sacred art of Busto Arsizio’s churches. The Palazzo Marliani Cicogna provides another cultural focus. It was selected as the permanent home of the collection. On 3 May 1990, the collection’s first eight rooms, containing around 50 paintings, drawings, documents, and sculptures, were opened to the public there. Busto Arsizio therefore offers various ways of engaging with art: through churches and sacred themes, through urban architecture, and through the history of a collection.
