Hiking between hamlets, forests and mountains

Cocquio-Trevisago combines a marked trail to Forte di Orino with historic hamlets and independent cultural sites. Sentiero 17 leads from Cocquio Trevisago railway station via Caldana to Forte di Orino. The route covers 6.5 km, includes 874 metres of ascent and is estimated to take three hours. Cocquio Trevisago railway station serves both as the starting point and as the car park for the trail described.

The trail from Cocquio Trevisago to Forte di Orino passes through the historic hamlets of Caldana and Cerro, with historic churches and views of Monte Rosa and the Alps. It then enters woodland and climbs the slopes of Monte Prà Camarée.

Mill Museum, Painting and Sculptures

The Museo Innocente Salvini is housed in the only grain mill for processing wheat and maize with three wheels and fully operational machinery. Around 300 m² of the museum serves as a gallery for works by the Lombard artist Innocente Salvini (1889–1979). Mill technology and painting thus come together here within a single museum.

The churches also preserve tangible traces of their construction history. The Chiesa della Purificazione di Maria features original architectural elements, including a single-arched window, an arch surround on the façade and terracotta decoration beneath the eaves of the apse. The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo displays exposed natural-stone masonry and preserves biforia with small columns on its sides. The Sentiero delle Sculture features sculptures by Sergio Terni made from chestnut wood, depicting real and fantastic creatures.

Caldana and Autumn Specialities

In Caldana, a district of Cocquio Trevisago, the Ottobre Caldanese series of events takes place every Sunday in October. It can be traced back fifty years and celebrates local culture, traditions and autumn specialities.
