Hiking, Cycling and Circular Routes

Several easy trails for trekking and walks through the wooded surroundings, with viewpoints along the way, start from Marzio. Marzio also has cycle paths surrounded by nature. The Monte Piambello viewpoints circular route passes over Monte Derta and returns to Marzio south of Marzio.

To the north of Marzio, you can hike the Belvederi di Monte Marzio circular route. Marzio is also home to some trails in Parco Cinque Vette, which extends for 14 kilometres between Monte Piambello, Monte Poncione, Val de’ Corni, Marzio and Monte Derta. On the Bocchetta Marzio-Stivioni route, the gravel road to Piambello leads to Bocchetta dei Frati; the trail then descends towards Marzio and reaches a turn-off for Bocchetta Stivioni. Itinerary 4 runs from Marzio via Forcorella, Monte Piambello and Bocchetta dei Frati, before returning to Marzio.

Panoramas of the Lake and Mountains

The viewpoints on Monte Marzio offer views over part of Lake Lugano and the mountains of Ticino, from Monte Lema via the Denti della Vecchia to San Salvatore. History and Traditions in Marzio

The historic Sentieri della Pace – Frontiera Nord hiking trail, Route 4, runs between Marzio and Cuasso al Monte. It leads to trenches, communication trenches, machine-gun emplacements, and stone and concrete barracks. The Linea Cadorna fortifications in Marzio were reinforced from 1911 under the direction of the military engineering corps of Milan and expanded until 1916.

The Chiesa di San Sebastiano Martire stands in the historic centre. It was built around 1740 on an existing 16th-century chapel. During Canto del Maggio, the arrival of the beautiful season is celebrated in Marzio on 1 May. The day before, a flowering branch of the wild cherry tree is gathered and decorated with ribbons and bows; the young men then carry the branch from house to house and sing Canto del Maggio.

The San Sebastiano festival takes place on the Sunday closest to the feast day and includes a Eucharistic procession through the streets of Marzio in the afternoon. The festival also features a traditional auction of donations from local residents in aid of the church of Marzio.

Getting There and Orientation

From Varese, you can reach Marzio via the SS 233 Varesina through Valganna, followed by the Ghirla-Brusimpiano provincial road. Alternatively, the route from Ganna to Marzio passes through Boarezzo. A public bus service connects Marzio with Varese, offering several daily services in both directions.
