Cislago combines sacred art, historical traces and nature to create a diverse destination. Several churches, Castello Visconti Castelbarco, the Garden Museo Equestre and Parco del Bosco del Rugareto offer different ways to explore the area’s history and landscape. Those who enjoy planning their days around specific themes will find inspiration here for architecture, painting, local heritage and experiences in nature. When choosing your accommodation, you can accordingly focus on culture, nature or connections to other destinations.
Historical traces around the castle
The present structure of Castello Visconti Castelbarco dates from the 17th century. The Castello is not open to visitors. Today’s Parco comunale della Repubblica, beyond the gate, was formerly the garden of Castello Visconti Castelbarco. The Oratorio Visconteo was founded in the 14th century as the family chapel of the feudal lord.
Sacred art and distinctive architecture
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta contains paintings by Lampugnani and Fiammenghino. The Chiesa di San Giulio has an octagonal floor plan and neoclassical decoration. The Chiesa della Beata Vergine Annunciata features a square floor plan with a single-nave interior, a rectangular apse and a small bell gable. Its façade displays elements of Lombard Gothic style: pointed-arch windows, a rose window, terracotta and corbel arches.
The Chiesa della Beata Vergine Annunciata also contains 14th-century frescoes depicting Saint Anthony the Great and Saint Martin. The bell tower of the Chiesa parrocchiale di S. Maria Assunta has a square floor plan, is dated to the 12th or 13th century and bears an inscription from 1492. Behind the main altar are a monumental organ in a 17th-century case and a choir loft; their present arrangement in the apse is not original.
Santa Maria Iniziata and Luigi Monza
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Iniziata also has deep historical roots: according to the oldest documents, it already existed towards the end of the 15th century. Five frescoes in the niches of its side walls are attributed to GianGiacomo Lampugnani. The presbytery contains a cycle dated 1615 comprising three scenes: the Visitation, the Nativity of Mary and the founding of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
The Garden Museo Equestre houses more than 60 historic carriages, wagons, sleighs and Surki carts. The collection is located in a covered area of approximately 1,000 square metres amid the greenery of the Massina district. The museum is also accessible to people with motor disabilities. Luigi Monza offers a personal connection to the town’s history: he was born in Cislago on 22 June 1898 into a farming family. Casa Beato Luigi Monza was one of the farmhouses in the immediate vicinity of the castle where the Monza family lived for several years. Don Luigi and the Little Apostles founded the association La Nostra Famiglia.
Nature, getting there and travel planning
Parco del Bosco del Rugareto is a protected area of supra-municipal interest that also extends into Cislago. Cislago has rail and road connections to Milan and Varese. Cislago can also be reached via the S.S. 233 between Varese and Saronno. On Sunday, 17 May 2026, the 14th edition of the Maratonina del Rugareto was scheduled to take place as a recreational and exercise event open to everyone. When choosing a hotel in Cislago, culture, nature, local history and mobility can represent different focal points for your trip.
For further travel planning, you can also consider Malgesso, Tronzano Lago Maggiore, Rasa Di Varese, Cittiglio, Crugnola, Gazzada Schianno, Angera and Ternate.
