In Vararo, the Chiesa di San Bernardo has a rectangular ground plan with a single-nave interior and a small semicircular apse. Its short bell tower houses the bells of the demolished Chiesa di San Giulio in Cittiglio. This creates a concrete connection between the two churches through the bells, without equating their architectural features.

Waterfalls and clear boundaries when planning

The Cascate di Cittiglio comprise three waterfalls. They are formed by the San Giulio mountain stream and are located in a wooded natural landscape at elevations between 324 and 474 metres above sea level. The different elevations give the landscape a clearly recognisable vertical dimension and complement the cultural impressions with a natural feature.

At the same time, an important access restriction applies to the Parco delle Cascate: it is closed until further notice. In addition, access to all paths and trails, including unmarked ones, on every slope around the park is prohibited. This notice is part of realistic travel planning in Cittiglio, as the waterfall landscape should not be generally classified as a freely accessible excursion destination.

Trekking and cycle tour to Passo del Cuvignone

Cittiglio is part of the 3V – Via Verde Varesina, a network of nature trails established for trekking to explore the Province of Varese. The cycle tour to Passo del Cuvignone begins in Cittiglio and ends at Passo del Cuvignone. It is 9,260 metres long, climbs 793 metres in elevation and has an average gradient of 8.56%.

The route data make it clear that this tour is particularly interesting for visitors who deliberately want to include a pronounced mountain section in their trip. The final ascent to Passo del Cuvignone offers distant views of the Alps and Lake Maggiore. The route therefore combines measurable sporting challenges with a landscape experience that extends beyond Cittiglio into the Alpine and pre-Alpine surroundings.
