Nature between lake, forest and meadows

Gerenzano can be discovered through nature, history and outdoor activities. Parco degli Aironi covers 40 hectares and includes a lake area, Lombard broadleaf forest, meadowland and an agro-pastoral environment. Its lake covers 53,000 square metres and is more than 15 metres deep. A dedicated birdwatching facility provides an additional focus for visitors who want to experience the landscape and wildlife attentively.

Parco dei Mughetti is also part of the municipality’s natural surroundings. The areas belonging to Gerenzano are characterised by agriculture and forestry. The park lies in areas of Lombardy considered priority areas for the conservation of biodiversity. As a result, Gerenzano is not centred only on individual viewpoints, but on different types of landscape: water, forest, meadows and cultivated areas.

Fontanile and traces of the landscape’s history

The Fontanile di San Giacomo originates in Gerenzano. The rise of groundwater there is partly natural and partly connected with the historic extraction of clay. This clay was used in nearby brickworks to make bricks. In the Fontanile area, a visible network of channels has also been preserved; it once enabled water to circulate through the meadows. The site therefore combines nature observation with a concrete insight into the former use of the landscape.

Churches with frescoes and a long history

The Chiesa di San Giacomo Maggiore preserves frescoes inside that are attributed to Marco D’Oggiono. Its rectangular presbytery is completely decorated with frescoes; the central altarpiece is attributed to Giovanni Agostino da Lodi. The building complex also includes an oratory commissioned by Giacomo Fagnani at the beginning of the 16th century. Those interested in Lombard sacred spaces and pictorial details will find several distinct points of interest here.

The Chiesa dei Santi Apostoli Pietro e Paolo adds to this historical focus. It had already been among the churches dependent on the Pieve di Appiano Gentile since the 13th century. In addition to its wide entrance staircase, it has a side ramp that facilitates access for people with disabilities. Route between Gerenzano and Rescaldina

In December 2024, an approximately 2.8-kilometre marked hiking trail between Gerenzano and Rescaldina was signposted. It connects Parco degli Aironi with Parco Iasilli on Via Nenni in Rescaldina. The route was recommended for hikers, cyclists and horse riders.
