Gavirate showcases everyday Italian life, local history and the landscape in a variety of facets. Gavirate’s Friday market dates back to a decree issued by Emperor Charles V in 1539, which authorised a weekly Friday market. This gives the town a clear connection to local market life alongside its cultural and natural attractions.

Fignano and Art in the Town Centre

Fignano is shaped by a unique history of artistic design. The initiative to create the painted village of Fignano began in 1978 with the involvement of painter Luigi Brunella. In the historic town centre, the walls of old houses and palaces are decorated with numerous graffiti works. For visitors interested in culture, both the origins of this artistic design and its visible traces are therefore central points of interest.

After the master’s death, the decorative work was continued by the Amici di Fignano association during the annual Giornate del Graffito and Festa dei Fiori. The two events are therefore part of the cultural setting in which Fignano’s graffiti tradition continues to live on.

Historic Sites and Panoramic Views

The Chiostro di Voltorre is located in the vicinity of Gavirate and is classified as a museum. It was recognised as a national monument as early as 1911. The Parco Morselli provides a contrasting landscape: it lies on a terraced slope and offers an impressive view of the lake and the Monte Rosa massif.

At the Lido and Along the Paths

The Lido di Gavirate is a well-maintained and well-equipped green space. A cycle and pedestrian path runs through the grounds along the lakeshore, and the Lido also has a children’s playground. A motorhome parking area is located along the tree-lined avenue at the Lido di Gavirate. This brings together a lakeside path, green space, play area and a practical facility for travellers with motorhomes in one place.

The path along Strada Rossa provides another distinctive landscape experience. There, an increasingly steep mule track leads into the area of the Campo dei Fiori nature reserve. Together with the cycle and pedestrian path at the Lido, this provides both a lakeside route and an uphill path towards the protected area for different forms of exercise and experiencing nature.
