Olgiate Olona between the Plain and the Olona Valley

Olgiate Olona lies in a largely flat landscape. To the east, a valley stretches out, where the Olona River flows 20 metres lower. Villa Greppi–Gonzaga and Sacred Art

A cultural focal point is the Villa Greppi–Gonzaga complex. The estate has been owned by the municipality since 1976 and today includes, among other features, a large public park. The Church of Santi Innocenti is located within this complex and was consecrated on 21 December 1936. In its apse, you can see the fresco “Gesù coi pargoli innocenti” and side paintings by Antonio Martinotti. The façades of the villa preserve neoclassical elements: pediments, stone window surrounds, colonnades, and smooth-finished rustication.

Other churches and chapels also give Olgiate Olona a distinctive historical character. The ancient provost and collegiate church of Santi Stefano e Lorenzo martiri has roots in an ecclesiastical pieve that already existed in the 5th century. Medieval herringbone masonry can be seen on its façade wall. The Madonna del Rosario Chapel was built in 1525 by residents of Olgiate Olona as a votive offering following the plague of 1524, expanded to an octagonal plan at the end of the 18th century, and restored in 2007–2008. Its vault paintings, inspired by the glory of Mary and Jesus, were created by Biagio Bellotti in 1784–1785.

The Cappella San Genesio is also part of the area’s sacred history. After January 1982, it underwent structural restoration; the building work was completed about a year and a half later. The restoration included the frescoes, the interior floor, and the altar. In San Gregorio Magno al Lazzaretto, the church preserves the 17th-century painting “San Gregorio magno e le anime purganti”.

Cycling and Walking Paths along the River

Those who want to explore Olgiate Olona by bicycle or on foot will find several different types of paths. A cycling and walking path runs through Parco del Medio Olona, mainly following the Olona’s river embankment and, in places, running alongside the former Valmorea railway line. Remains of mills and examples of industrial archaeology are still visible along the river. They date back to uses of the Olona’s water power that have been in operation since the 17th century.

At Via Molino del Sasso, the Valle Olona route becomes a protected cycling and walking path along the valley floor. In Olgiate Olona, the Pista Ciclopedonale della Valle Olona passes by Villa Greppi Gonzaga or provides access to it as part of the valley’s historical, cultural, and artistic heritage. The Via Francisca del Lucomagno was a pilgrimage route that descended from Switzerland to the Via Francigena and continued on to Rome.
