Lonate Pozzolo: Trails, Valley Views and Lombard Architectural History

Lonate Pozzolo can be explored via a clearly defined route and through historical and cultural sites. Via Gaggio is 4 kilometres long, begins in Lonate Pozzolo and ends at the iron bridge over the Ticino, also in Lonate Pozzolo. This clearly defined route provides you with a concrete starting point, while the churches, monastery and exhibition appeal to other interests.

Via Gaggio and the Ticino Landscape

The first section of Via Gaggio, up to the “Ex Dogana Austroungarica” Centro Parco, is wide and flat. It passes through forests of English oak, black locust and Scots pine. The Centro Parco is located in the village of Tornavento, on the edge of a river terrace, and occupies a panoramic position above the Ticino Valley. This allows you to treat a woodland passage and a valley view as distinct focal points when planning your visit.

Via Gaggio includes a looped detour called the “Percorso sensoriale”. It is intended in particular for people with hearing impairments. If different sensory needs are relevant to your travel group, include this specifically designated section of the route in your individual planning.

Culture in Tornavento and Lonate Pozzolo

At the “Ex Dogana Austroungarica” Centro Parco, a museum exhibition tour includes the geology, archaeology and seeds galleries. The visitor centre of the Ex Dogana Austroungarica provides tourists with information about the park, hiking trails, and historical and cultural attractions. For a stay combining landscape and culture, this creates different ways to explore the area: taking in the park and hiking trails, or delving deeper into geology, archaeology and seeds.

The religious buildings also span different periods. The Chiesa di Sant'Ambrogio dates from 1499 and was enlarged in 1560. A portico was built in front of the Chiesa di Sant'Eugenio in 1900. For this church, a “capella de Tornavento” in the Pieve di Dairago is documented as having been mentioned in 1398. If you would like to view regional architecture through its historical development, these dates provide concrete reference points for exploring the area.

The Monastero di San Michele was founded in 1290 by a group of Augustinian nuns and is considered an important example of Lombard Renaissance architecture. The municipality of Lonate Pozzolo acquired the monastery in 1983; restoration work turned it into the home of the municipal library. For planning your visit, note that the Monastero di San Michele is only partially accessible to everyone and currently has neither a lift nor an access ramp. If mobility needs vary within your group, take its partial accessibility and the lack of a lift and ramp into account when selecting your destinations.

Views and Planning Your Stay

A belvedere overlooking the Ticino Valley was added during the redevelopment of Piazza Parravicino in 1997. With the Centro Parco’s panoramic location and the route of Via Gaggio, Lonate Pozzolo allows you to choose between different focal points, including valley views, woodland passages, exhibitions and architectural history. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation, your preferred daily rhythm is therefore particularly important: depending on whether your focus is on trails, views, exhibitions or architectural history, a different location may be the more sensible choice.
