Cancelli: Hiking, Springs and Art
Cancelli combines hikes through woodland and spring landscapes with historical attractions in the village and its surroundings. If you would like to combine nature experiences and culture within a manageable setting during your trip to Italy, the village offers several clearly distinct points of interest for this purpose.
Hiking along the Giano and Monte Maggio
The IT 7.01 circular hike begins and ends in Cancelli. Another hike leads to the Cascate del Rio Giano: it first passes the ruins of Santa Maria dell’Appennino and then continues through woodland to waterfalls and springs. From Cancelli, the route follows the Giano to its sources at the foot of Monte Maggio.
The Fonti del Giano hike is also available for the route to the sources. The CAI Trail 129 leads the hike to the Cascate del Rio Giano over the slopes of Monte Vallarga and back to the starting point through undergrowth rich in flowers. Primroses, violets, crocuses and snowdrops grow there, among others. The various routes make it possible to choose during planning between a circular trail, a river route and a section of trail offering interesting insights into nature.
Art and history in Cancelli
The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cancelli houses a painting created in 1533 by Fra' Fabiano da Urbino. It depicts the Madonna and Child enthroned, along with Saints Paul, Dominic, Sigismund, Catherine of Siena and Catherine of Alexandria. The image is surrounded by 15 panels depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary.
The Sentiero della Carta also connects a trail with historical traces. At Camporege, it reaches the site of the former fulling mill belonging to the merchant Lodovico di Ambrogio di Bonaventura and continues to Cancelli–S.Maria d’Appennino. The monastery of Santa Maria d’Appennino was probably founded in the 10th century by the lords of Rocca d’Appennino near the Croce d’Appennino pass.
