Walls as the Defining Framework of the Town

Corinaldo combines a distinctive townscape with art, religious sites of remembrance and green open spaces. The current outline of the walls dates from 1367 and was expanded between 1480 and 1490. For your first impression, this is a good starting point: here, history appears as a tangible framework of the town, not merely as a backdrop.

The fortifications extend for about one kilometre. They include bastioned gates, polygonal bastions, round and pentagonal towers, sentry boxes and machicolations. Those interested in architecture and military history will encounter different building forms within a coherent defensive system.

The Pozzo della Polenta is also located along the Piaggia. It can be combined with a walk through Corinaldo.

Art and Religious Sites

The Civica Raccolta d’Arte Claudio Ridolfi in Corinaldo offers another cultural perspective. It was opened to the public in 1996. This means the town can be explored not only through its outward appearance, but also through an art collection.

The Diocesan Shrine of Santa Maria Goretti is located at the highest point of Corinaldo’s historic centre. The birthplace of Santa Maria Goretti is in Contrada “Pregiagna”, 1.5 kilometres from the historic centre, and preserves the Goretti family’s original furnishings. The two places offer different points of focus: the shrine in the centre, and the birthplace with its original furnishings outside it.

Paths, Parks and Different Rhythms

Corinaldo also remains diverse while you are out exploring. The network of cycle and footpaths comprises five routes in urban and outlying areas. This distinction helps you choose whether to focus your exploration on the townscape or on paths outside the town centre, without committing your day to just one way of getting around.

The Selva di Boccalupo provides opportunities to enjoy nature: the park covers about six hectares and is characterised by spontaneous vegetation. In the Parco delle Fonti, an area with children’s play equipment is combined with a roller-skating rink. The Fonti building in the Parco delle Fonti was constructed at the beginning of the 17th century.

A Taste of Tradition

A culinary reference leads to Pecorelle. According to tradition, they are a Christmas pastry from Corinaldo that was baked on the day before the Feast of the Epiphany. This speciality complements the view of the walls, art and landscape with a locally rooted, seasonal food culture.
