Sassoferrato between the Rocca, art and archaeology

The Rocca di Albornoz, several museums, the history of sulphur mining and a hiking route with distance and elevation data offer different ways to discover the town. The area around Sassoferrato also features works of art and architecture, as well as other cultural and natural attractions.

Rocca di Albornoz and views over the landscape

The Rocca di Albornoz is a massive 14th-century military complex. It was built in 1365 on the orders of Cardinal Egidio Albornoz, making it an important historical landmark of Sassoferrato. The summit of the park surrounding the Rocca offers wide-ranging and impressive panoramic views. A visit therefore combines the contemplation of a medieval fortification with an expansive view of the landscape.

Museums from Sentinum to contemporary art

The Civic Archaeological Museum of Sassoferrato is housed in the Palazzo dei Priori and displays finds from the ancient city of Sentinum. The Cabernardi sulphur’s Mine Museum also offers an insight into the local past. It tells the story of a sulphur-mining area that was considered the most important sulphur-mining area in Europe for a long period. In the Cabernardi district, the Archaeomineral Park offers a visitor experience in which the sites and facilities used for sulphur extraction can be explored.

The town’s art scene extends into the present day. MAM’S Contemporary Art Gallery contains 320 exhibited works, including paintings, graphic art and sculptures. Its rooms were designed for workshops, conferences, concerts, lectures and artistic education activities. The Civic Art Collection is a permanent complement, housed in the rooms of the Palazzo Oliva.

The Art and Popular Traditions Museum is housed in the Palazzo Montanari. The palazzo is an old building on a rocky outcrop surrounded by nature on the hill that divides the town centre.

Romanesque architecture and regional artistic tradition

The Abbey of Santa Croce is one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in the Marche region. Its left apse contains 14th-century frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Saint Thomas. Another cultural landmark is the International Art Exhibition G.B.Salvi. It was inaugurated in 1951 as the “Premio pittura G.B. Salvi” on a private initiative, to honour Giovanni Battista Salvi and promote the local artistic tradition.

Historical reenactments and special experiences

The historical reenactment Battle of the Nations takes place every last weekend of July near the Archaeological Park of Sentinum. The event features more than 200 performers and two historical camps.
