Campodiegoli: Trails, History and Nature in the Monte Cucco Area

Campodiegoli combines local religious history with trails through open mountain areas, woodland and historic crossings. The Church of San Pietro in Campodiegoli is the parish church of the village. At the same time, several trail connections run through the surrounding region.

Hiking Trails with Different Profiles

CAI Route IT 2.09 runs as a circular trail from Campodiegoli via Valico Croce Appennino and Valico di Fossato back to Campodiegoli. It uses trails 126, 235 (9), s.n. and b.101. CAI Trail 126 connects Campodiegoli with Trail 235 (9); it is listed as 2.7 km long, with a walking time of 45 minutes and 285 metres of ascent.

CAI Trail 235 runs from Fossato di Vico via Valico di Fossato, Passo Chiaromonte and Cima Filetta to Val di Ranco. The historic trail from Campodiegoli to San Cassiano runs along the boundary between two regions. Its first section to the ruins of Santa Maria d’Appennino at the original site is 3 km long and is listed as taking 45 minutes.

Grassland, Woodland and Monte Cucco

On IT 2.09, after Valico Croce dell’Appennino, the trail passes the signpost for Parco del Monte Cucco. It then descends through open grassland and woodland towards Valico di Fossato. In the wider regional surroundings of the Monte Cucco Protected Area associated with the route are high-altitude mountain areas, extensive karst cave systems, beech forests and rock formations.

Historic Traces around Campodiegoli

The history of the village is also connected with trails and crossings: in the past, Campodiegoli was a historically important crossroads and a major road hub. Since the 13th century, a hospital for travellers and pilgrims dedicated to Saint Lawrence, San Lorenzo, stood nearby. Sections carved into the rock of the probably prehistoric trans-Apennine route can also be seen in the vicinity.

According to current knowledge, Campodiegoli is first mentioned in 1111 in documents of the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria d’Appennino. The village may have originated as a settlement of Castello di Colrotone, which was set on fire by the Fabrianesi in 1226. These traces, dating from different periods, give your visit a historical perspective without reducing the village to a single chapter of its past.

Event and Accessibility

Campodiegoli is accessible to people with disabilities. A new edition of Giochi Senza Frontiere will take place on 4 and 5 July 2026: two-day team games, entertainment and food stalls are planned. The event promotes cooperation, participation and interaction between different generations. Alongside trails and history, community experiences are therefore also part of the character of the village.
