Senigallia between Velvet Beach and a Great History

Senigallia combines an expansive coastline with an unusually dense succession of historic sites. Velvet Beach stretches for 13 kilometers and has very fine, golden-colored sand. This includes the dunes of Senigallia, which are fenced off to prevent the removal of sand and plants. When choosing a hotel for your stay, you can therefore first decide whether the focus of your trip should be on the sea, architecture and history, or a combination of these themes.

Architecture between Market and Fortress

A central cultural and historical point of reference is the Rocca Roveresca. Its defensive structures range from the Roman foundation of Senigallia through medieval fortifications to the fortress of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta from 1450. The Portici Ercolani provide a different accent. They were designed in the mid-18th century by Giuseppe Ercolani on behalf of Pope Benedict XIV to accommodate the annual Fiera Franca. A weekly market takes place under the Portici Ercolani every Thursday morning.

The Foro Annonario is also part of Senigallia's built history: it was designed in 1834 by the Senigallia-born architect Pietro Ghinelli. The Teatro La Fenice, Senigallia's historic municipal theater, offers another perspective on the city's history. It stands on the same site as the former Teatro La Fenice and the previous municipal theater. On the coast, the Rotonda a Mare completes this picture. It was inaugurated on July 18, 1933, and is a harmonious example of seaside resort architecture.

Museums and Evidence from Several Eras

At the Area Archeologica La Fenice, visitors can view both the remains of Roman buildings and the archaeological finds discovered on site. Free guided tours are offered there in summer. The Palazzo Mastai – Museo Pio IX introduces a different historical era: it is the house where Giovanni Maria, the future Pope Pius IX, was born on May 13, 1792. The rooms on the first floor house a museum with significant memorabilia from the life of Pope Pius IX.

The ceremonial hall of the Palazzo Mastai – Museo Pio IX also contains a cycle of 20 biblical paintings by the Senigallia-born painter Giovanni Anastasi. The Palazzetto Baviera provides a distinctive architectural focus. Five rooms have ceilings fully decorated with stucco by Federico Brandani; their themes include Roman imperial and republican history, the Iliad, Hercules and the Old Testament.

Cuisine by the Sea

The seaside cuisine of Senigallia includes grilled sardines, fried fish, brodetto, mussels, clams and sea snails. This selection adds a culinary dimension to the historical and coastal impressions.
