A fortified medieval village above the Tronto Valley

Acquaviva Picena lies on a hill overlooking the Tronto Valley. Its hillside location shapes the form of the center and the alternation between valley views and distant vistas. The historic center is a fortified medieval village that, due to the morphology of the terrain, extends strongly from east to west and ends at the fortress. In clear weather, the view from Acquaviva Picena reaches as far as Monte Vettore in the Sibillini Mountains, as well as the more distant Abruzzo mountains of Gran Sasso and Majella.

Fortress, passages, panoramas and craftsmanship

Porta Vecchia leads to the restored Trabucco passage, which forms part of the old defensive structures. The passage is partially covered, while the upper part of the keep is open. From there, the fortress offers a 360-degree panorama over the sea, valleys and surrounding hills.

The Rocca houses the „La fortezza nel tempo“ Archaeological Museum. The local craft culture is reflected in Pajarole, traditional handmade products made from wheat straw and willow branches. The „Pajarola“ Museum preserves baskets, kitchen utensils and dolls made of woven straw, willow branches and natural materials.

Churches, artworks and restoration

The Church of San Nicolò di Bari was completed by the first half of the 16th century. Its interior includes, among other works, the Madonna del Rosario, the Deposizione dalla Croce and the altarpiece Ritrovamento della Croce from the Venetian school.

The Church of San Francesco has a single-nave interior with side altars dedicated to Saint Francis and Saint Anthony of Padua. Its complete restoration and reopening for worship took place in 1989.

Traditions, procession and historic festivals

The Bara del Cristo Morto is carried through Acquaviva Picena in a torchlit procession.

Sponsalia takes place annually in Acquaviva Picena. It is a historical reenactment of the wedding between Forasteria di Acquaviva and Rinaldo di Brunforte, held at the fortress in summer. It includes processions in historic costumes, festivities, games and performances. The timing of the festivals is clearly distinct: the Bara is tied to Good Friday, while Sponsalia takes place in summer.

The medieval wedding banquet at the medieval fortress of Acquaviva Picena features medieval specialties. Reservations are required to attend the medieval wedding banquet.

Local shortcrust pastry specialty

The local cuisine also has a specialty: Pesche are local shortcrust pastries with a chocolate filling, soaked in Alchermes. Pesche are therefore pastries, not fresh fruit.
