Monsampolo del Tronto combines expansive landscapes with a fortified borgo, archaeological traces and local culinary traditions.

Panorama and Historic Center

From Monsampolo del Tronto, visitors can enjoy views across the Tronto Valley, the Picenian hills, the Monti Sibillini, Gran Sasso d’Italia and as far as the Adriatic Sea.

The fortified borgo preserves the urban layout created by the municipality between the 14th and 15th centuries. One of its distinctive architectural features is the Porta da Mare, also known as the Arco della Morte. Its impressive passage has a cross vault that narrows toward the pointed-arch gate.

Church, Crypt and Archaeological Finds

The Chiesa di Maria SS. Assunta has a unified interior dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Baroque features can be seen in the altars and stucco work. Beneath the church is the Museo della Cripta on Piazza Roma; it can be accessed through a side entrance on Via Mazzini.

An archaeological investigation of the crypt carried out in 2003 led to the discovery of a system of medieval pits beneath the Chiesa di Maria SS. Assunta. The Museo Laboratorio Archeologico complements this cultural and historical focus with two Roman tombs and finds from the Roman necropolis of Contrada Comunanza.

The former San Francesco monastery was built by the Observant Friars Minor toward the end of the 16th century, together with the Church of the Holy Cross. The Church of the Holy Cross forms part of the historic monastery complex. The former monastery has a frescoed cloister with an octagonal travertine fountain.

The Abbey of SS. Benedetto e Mauro in Tronto preserves architectural elements dating its foundation to the Early Middle Ages, namely the 8th or 9th century. The abbey’s architectural elements belong to an earlier period than the urban layout of the borgo from the 14th and 15th centuries.

Underground Passages and Regional Cuisine

Beneath the Terra Vecchia hill, the underground passages extend for 120 meters and are accessible to visitors.

The Panetto di fichi, also known as Torrone di fichi, is another part of the local identity. This typical sweet from Monsampolo del Tronto is made with peeled, sun-dried white figs, roasted almonds, candied citron, cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla, candied orange peel and various essences. In addition to the festival featuring handmade potato gnocchi, this fig sweet is also part of the local cuisine of Monsampolo. During the Ferragosto week, Monsampolo hosts a traditional festival featuring handmade potato gnocchi.

The Ciclabile del Tronto

The section of the Ciclabile del Tronto leading to Monsampolo del Tronto runs partly in the shade of poplars, oaks and acacias.

On the Ciclabile del Tronto, sturdy footbridges make it possible to cross the Fiobbo and Morrice streams.
