Discover Cossignano: Art, History and Local Festivals
Cossignano between Art and Medieval Urban History
Cossignano combines art, medieval urban history, nature trails and festivals with a local food culture.
Sacred Art and Picenian Finds
The Museo civico di arte sacra in the Chiesa dell’Annunziata houses a fresco dated 1530 depicting a “Deposizione dalla Croce”. Its authorship is attributed either to Cola dell’Amatrice or to the master Giacomo Bonfini da Patrignone. The most valuable painting in the Chiesa dell’Annunziata is a 2.25 × 1.70-metre altarpiece by Vincenzo Pagani (around 1490–1568), depicting Saint Anthony the Great, Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Job.
The Antiquarium Comunale “Niccola Pansoni” is located in a room within the Chiesa dell’Annunziata. Picenian finds illustrate the everyday life of the Piceni: from food and clothing to domestic activities and warfare. On display are kitchen pottery, ornaments, jewellery, tools and weapons; reconstruction drawings and information panels in Italian and English complement the presentation.
Archives, Walls and Green Spaces
The Archivio Storico Comunale preserves documents dating from 1373 to 1983, including the original manuscript of the 1581 municipal statutes. Prior reservation and approval by the responsible management of resident services are required for consultation; on Saturdays, the designated time slot is from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The medieval castle walls of Cossignano date from the period after municipal autonomy was established in 1291. Their oldest and best-preserved sections are characterised by pointed arches. The Porta di Levante – also known as Porta del Burgo and Porta di S. Giorgio – is the most significant and best-preserved remnant of the former castle wall. Parco da Sole lies at the foot of the southern town wall.
Nature Trail with a Shorter Circular Route
The Le Cese nature trail passes through agricultural land and wooded areas. Around 80 percent of the route is unpaved, and signage following CAI conventions is provided in both directions. A connection in the middle of the route allows for a shorter 5.3-kilometre circular route.
Festivals and Specialities Throughout the Year
In the historic centre, the medieval festival “Cossignano, castellum Martis” features costumed historical groups, flag throwers, drummers, dances, medieval games and fireworks. The Cossignano Medioevo Festival always takes place between the end of July and the beginning of August and comprises two traditional components. The Festa e Fiera di San Giorgio celebrates the patronal feast of Saint George on 23 April and concludes on 25 April with a Mass featuring numerous exhibitors as well as areas dedicated to horticulture, typical foods and handicrafts.
The traditional Sagra del “fritto misto all’ascolana” includes stuffed olives, Cremini, fried onions, mushrooms, courgettes and pieces of turkey, as well as wines from local producers made from native grape varieties in the DOCG, DOC and IGT categories. There are also dry biscuits from local bakeries. The festival is scheduled to take place between the end of July and the beginning of August in Piazza Europa. The Belvedere di Ponente is a new green space next to Piazzale Europa.
