Folignano Among Hills and Foothills

Folignano lies on a hill south of Ascoli Piceno. The municipal area is predominantly hilly and is crossed by the Marino stream. In the southwestern part, the landscape is more rugged; there, the area extends into the foothills at the foot of Montagna dei Fiori. To the northeast rises the Rocca di Morro hill. This creates a townscape shaped not only by the settlement itself, but also by the different landforms. For spatial orientation, the Folignano hill, the Marino stream, the southwestern foothill area and Rocca di Morro in the northeast can be considered separate reference points.

Archaeological and Historical Traces

Picene necropolises were discovered near Folignano and in the hamlet of Piane di Morro. A bronze sword with a distinctive antenna-shaped hilt was also found in Piane di Morro. The ruins of Castello di Folignano have been preserved in Castel Folignano. Castello di Folignano was a fortress overlooking the Picene valley.

Today, the Palazzo with its bell tower and a clock dating from the early years of the century stands above the remains of Castello di Folignano. In Roman times, Rocca di Morro was a strategic point known as Castrum Murciae. A recovered mosaic is attributed to a Roman villa in Rocca di Morro, a hamlet of Folignano. The parish church of San Gennaro in Folignano preserves a gilded copper reliquary from the 16th century.

The Surrounding Area

The area around Folignano includes the Museo dell'Alto Medioevo, Malaspina Palace, the Museo diocesano and Palazzo Bonaparte. The Grotte di Sant Angelo, the summit of Monte Piselli, and the mountains Monte Girella and Monte Foltrone are also nearby. Those wishing to combine cultural destinations with natural surroundings will therefore find museums and palaces in the area, as well as the Grotte di Sant Angelo, the summit of Monte Piselli and the mountains Monte Girella and Monte Foltrone.

A Festive Occasion in Castel Folignano

The Feast of Saint Cyprian takes place in Castel Folignano on the second Sunday in September. The celebration includes a procession, a blessing with the saint's relic and the traditional medal.
