Massignano offers various starting points for a journey through landscapes, the coast and local character. The hills alternate between small woods and clearings as well as cultivated fields. The municipality includes Marina di Massignano, which stretches for two kilometres along the coast. Massignano Beach consists of golden sand mixed with pebbles and shells. Along the coastline, several concessions offering beach services alternate with extensive sections of free beach. The area provides a habitat for squirrels, foxes, badgers, porcupines, wild boars and deer; birds include green woodpeckers and buzzards.

Circular Routes through Fields, Woods and Hills

If you would like to compare different landscapes during your trip, several circular routes run through the surrounding area. The “Anello dell’Agrumeto e della Lavanda” circular route passes through fields and woods to the old citrus grove of Borgo Crocifisso and then along characteristic lavender fields. The “Anello dei Mandorli e dei Lauri” leads from the town through fields and woods to panoramic ridges offering views of the Adriatic, the surrounding towns, the Monti della Laga and the Monti Sibillini. The “Anello di San Pietro” passes through fields, woods and clay walls before opening up views of the valley of the Torrente Menocchia.

The “Anello della Diga” leads to the dam on the border with Campofilone and then to the characteristic lavender fields with numerous panoramic views. The “Anello di Villa Santi” begins at the old Abbey of Villa Santi, heads into the surrounding hills and runs along fields through an apple orchard on the border with Cupra Marittima. The “Anello della Marina” leads uphill from the coastline through fields, woods and Mediterranean scrub and then downhill again, offering numerous views of the Adriatic. The “Anelli Piceni – Percorso Verde” leads from Cupra Marittima through olive groves and cultivated fields to the centre of Massignano and then continues through the valley of the Torrente Menocchia into wooded areas between Ripatransone and Cupra Marittima.

Culture, History and Special Places

Culture can also be discovered at specific sites. The Museo San Giacomo is located in an adjoining room next to the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore and displays Vittore Crivelli’s painting “La Vergine adorante il Bambino”. The civic tower of Massignano was built as a bell tower and stands next to the town hall. In the hamlet of Villa Santi, the Abbey of Saints Felice and Adaucto was altered in the 17th century; its apse, however, retains its original Romanesque style. In the surroundings of Massignano are Roman caves locally known as the “grotte dei cento buchi”, featuring small niches for storing urns containing the remains of the deceased.

The history of Marina di Massignano includes a small chapel built there in 1946 as a mausoleum commemorating twelve people killed on 18 June 1944. A recurring event is the Sagra delle Frittelle, held every year on 14 August; its first edition took place in 1958.

Local Products and Distinctive Features

Special products are also part of the local character. Taccola is a characteristic agricultural niche product of Massignano, a special legume similar to a pea whose entire pod is eaten. “Nebbia della val Menocchia” is an indigenous olive variety from the Menocchia Valley area. At the Molino Agostini site in Massignano, there is a factory shop displaying the company’s own flours.
