Lisciano is first documented in the year 844 under the place name “Liciano territorio Trointesi.” Pope Leo IX’s confirmation from 1052 connects the Castello di Lisciano with its subordination to Ascoli. Taken together, this information leads from the early history of the settlement to a medieval connection with the area.

Castles, Fortifications and a Caciara

The Fortezza di Luisiano was a military base of the feudal lords of the time during the Middle Ages. Remains of the fortification wall or other defensive structures are still visible at the San Martino cliff. In the park near San Martino di Lisciano stands a restored “Caciara,” a typical stone structure built without mortar or cement for shepherds who spent the warm season on the mountain pastures. The fortification remains and the Caciara represent different uses of the mountain-adjacent surroundings: military security on the one hand and the seasonal life of the shepherds on the other.

Art and Museums in the Surrounding Area

The Museo Diocesano di Ascoli Piceno displays the Croce della Trinità di Lisciano, attributed to Andrea di Francesco Guardi from Florence.
