Marsia: Fluvione, Churches and Crispella

Marsia between the Fluvione and cultural trails

Marsia can be explored as a destination through two interconnected dimensions: the landscape along the Fluvione and the historic places that appear along the trails. Particularly striking is Ponte Nativo, a natural rock bridge over the Fluvione. The river lies about 15 m below it and runs between two vertical sandstone walls.

Landscape on two wheels

An important point of reference for cyclists is MTB Route 1. It begins near the turnoff to Casacagnano in Marsia, then leads across the Fluvione to Ponte Nativo and subsequently returns to the same starting point in Marsia.

Churches and historic traces

A small church dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie was built above Ponte Nativo in the 17th century. It contains an 18th-century painting depicting the Madonna with Saints Anthony, Stephen and Joseph.

Santo Stefano di Marsia also links local history with the trails. Together with the church of Pedara, the church belonged to the Farfensi Benedictines. The route “Discovering the Small Treasures of Marsia” begins with a visit to the church of Santo Stefano Protomartire in Marsia, which was formerly a monastery. The circular route “Anello Marsia – Vallicella – Monestino – Osoli – Vetoli” also begins at the church of Santo Stefano di Marsia.

Hiking trails on different scales

On Sunday, October 30, 2016, a hike took place on the circular route “Anello Marsia – Vallicella – Monestino – Osoli – Vetoli”. It was approximately 10 km long, involved around 500 m of ascent, had a technical difficulty rating of E and took about 4.5 hours.

The 100-km “GABA” trail offers a different format. It is divided into seven stages and passes through the municipalities of Ascoli Piceno, Venarotta, Comunanza, Roccafluvione, Montegallo and Acquasanta Terme. This provides a choice between a circular tour and a trail divided into stages for different hiking days.

Arena, watermill and waterfall

The Pignoloni watermill, dating from 1629, is located in the Arena district along the MTB route. In the area around Marsia, the route also leads along the Fluvione in the Arena district to a waterfall approximately 10 m high. Historic technology and the river landscape emerge here as distinct trail destinations.

Crispella and regional cuisine

Crispella is part of the local food culture. Traditionally, it was prepared by the “vergara” as nourishment during fieldwork. The first edition of the “Sagra della Crispella” took place in 1976. The “Sagra della Crispella e delle Mezzemaniche al Tartufo” is associated with the penultimate weekend in August and includes tastings of typical truffle-based dishes. Between August 16 and 18, 2019, the “Sagra della Crispella e Mezzemaniche al Tartufo” took place in the Marsia district; the focus was on high-quality black truffles and Crispella.
