Monteprandone between hills, sea and the Marche landscape
Monteprandone lies on a hill at an elevation of around 280 metres and offers views of the Adriatic, the Sibillini Mountains and Gran Sasso. The Belvedere Don Giuseppe Caselli is a viewpoint overlooking the Apennines of the Marche and Abruzzo.
Historic Centre and San Giacomo
With its lanes, squares and architectural monuments, Monteprandone’s historic centre preserves the municipality’s thousand-year-old history. At the request of the saint, Pope Nicholas V approved the construction of the monastery and the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie e Santuario di San Giacomo della Marca by the Franciscans of Monteprandone on 22 August 1449.
The Oratorio di San Giacomo della Marca was built in 1581 near the site traditionally regarded as the birthplace of the man who later became a saint. The Museo dei Codici di San Giacomo della Marca houses 61 volumes from the saint’s library. The Museo del Santuario di S. Giacomo della Marca preserves garments and cloaks used by San Giacomo.
The annual Mostra Nazionale di Arte Presepiale presents works created by teachers and students of the Accademia Italiana di Arte Presepiale.
Cycling and Walking Trails through the Marche
Pedalando tra flora e fauna is a mostly flat cycling route suitable for families, running almost entirely along the Ciclovia del Tronto. The route Tra vigneti e antichi borghi begins in the fortified village of Monteprandone and mainly follows country roads past vineyards and traditional farmhouses characteristic of the rural architecture of the Marche.
Along Monteprandone’s walking trails, local food and wine businesses can be visited to sample typical products such as cheeses, wines and oils. When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether the historic centre, cycling and walking trails, regional tastings or the nearby beaches are your main priority.
