Churches Between the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque

The Chiesa Parrocchiale S.Giovanni Battista in Appignano del Tronto is a Romanesque building from the first half of the 14th century. Repeated restorations in the 15th and 16th centuries gave the church Renaissance elements.

Another defining church is Chiesa San Michele Arcangelo. It was built in the 15th century by Lombard masters after flooding from the Chifente torrent destroyed the Franciscan monastery. From 1890 to 1909, the church was completely rebuilt. Its high altar features a 16th-century painting of the Assumption of the Virgin by Vincenzo Pagani.

Santa Maria del Piano Santo also tells the story of several eras. The church was built from 1604 to 1611 on the initiative of the Rosary Confraternity, on the site where a medieval wayside shrine chapel had already stood. Santa Maria del Piano Santo contains a Baroque altar; the fresco The Crowning of the Virgin is also attributed to the Maestro di Offida. Rural Architecture and a Special Place of Retreat

The Chiesa rurale dei Santi Gioacchino e Anna was built in 1775–1776 by Monsignor Francesco Antonio Marcucci for nuns and female students who spent their holidays at his country house. The church includes a small Romitorio, that is, a tiny one-person accommodation where Marcucci usually rested, prayed and meditated. The site thus combines a rural church with a very personal historical retreat. The small building thereby brings together holidays, prayer and meditation within the same rural complex.

Built of terracotta, the Chiesa rurale dei Santi Gioacchino e Anna has a simple bell-gable façade. Its travertine portal with architrave is surmounted by an oculus.

Badlands, Trails and a Regional Specialty

The landscape of Appignano del Tronto includes olive groves and impressive, barren and parched badlands at the foot of Monte dell’Ascensione. The route runs along quiet country roads and through cultivated fields and includes impressive sections of the Cammino dei Cappuccini.
