Offida combines impressive cultural sites, vibrant craftsmanship and a distinctive local food culture. The Teatro Serpente Aureo is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “The System of Italian Theatres following the Loge Principle in Central Italy between the 18th and 19th Centuries”. At the same time, it continues to serve as a venue for theatre seasons, concerts and Offida’s traditional carnival. This creates a destination where historic architecture and cultural events that are still actively maintained exist closely side by side.

Cultural History in Churches and Museums

Santa Maria della Rocca was built in 1330 on the foundations of a Lombard fortress. In the crypt, 14th-century frescoes retain their particular importance; many of them are attributed to the Maestro di Offida. The Santuario Diocesano del Miracolo Eucaristico, with its adjoining chapel in the former Augustinian monastery, was built between 1338 and 1441. At the end of the apse, in a niche protected by an iron grille and two 15th-century walnut doors, the remains of a Eucharistic miracle that took place in 1273 in Lanciano, Abruzzo, are preserved.

The Museo del merletto a tombolo opened in 1998 and is divided into seven rooms according to the techniques and uses involved in lace-making. Among its notable objects is a dress worn by Naomi Campbell in London in 1997. It was designed by Antonio Berardi and made by lace-makers from Offida. The Monumento alle Merlettaie complements this focus on craftsmanship in the public space: the sculptor Aldo Sergiacomi, who came from Offida, created it in 1983; it depicts three women working on bobbin lace.

The Museo Archeologico G. Allevi also covers several historical periods. The five rooms first focus on the life and research of Guglielmo Allevi, followed by prehistoric finds from the Middle Paleolithic, Late Neolithic and Bronze Age. Two further rooms display the Picene culture with bronzes, weapons, jewellery and pottery, while the fifth presents Roman and Lombard relics. The museum therefore presents artefacts from the Picene, Roman and Lombard cultures in a clearly structured sequence.

Palace, Workshop and Fortified Offida

The Polo Museale is housed in an 18th-century aristocratic palace. The palace formerly belonged to the Castellotti family, later known as De Castellotti. The Polo Museale includes the Museo delle Tradizioni Popolari, the Pinacoteca Civica, the Museo del Merletto a Tombolo and the Museo Archeologico G. Allevi. At the Museo Aldo Sergiacomi, you are in the sculptor’s former workshop rooms; numerous works and drawings by Aldo Sergiacomi, who came from Offida, are preserved there.

The Mura castellane of Offida were built between the 12th and 13th centuries and once enclosed the entire village. Their historical function is therefore different from that of the Chiesa di San Lazzaro, which is set in an impressive rural landscape and embodies traditional rural architecture. Both places show different sides of Offida: the village’s former fortifications and the connection between sacred architecture and the rural surroundings.

Local Specialties and Tastings

The agricultural business Ciù Ciù is part of Offida’s culinary offerings. In its showroom at Piazza del Popolo 20, it offers wine and oil tastings by reservation, as well as the sale of wine and oil. A typical sweet is the “funghetti” from Offida, made with anise. At the Sagra del Chichiripieno, organized by the Pro Loco di Offida, you can sample the famous stuffed pizza and other gastronomic specialties.

Offida therefore offers several distinct areas of interest for planning your visit: theatre and events, sacred buildings, museums covering art, craftsmanship and regional history, historic fortifications, as well as wine, oil and typical foods. Accommodation in Offida can accordingly be chosen based on which of these themes you want to shape your days.
