Castignano combines historic traces, local festival traditions and a landscape shaped by erosion. If you are looking for a place with specific cultural and historical sites for your trip to Italy, you will find starting points here both for exploring them and for planning an individual day trip. Your choice of accommodation can therefore be guided by the focus you wish to pursue.

Historic traces in the townscape

A monumental wall with thirteen arches fortifies Castignano along its southern escarpment. The Stele of Castignano was found in the Castignano area and dates from the 6th century BC; a copy stands near Piazza V. Emanuele. Its boustrophedon inscription tells how a son warns against desecrating his father's and mother's tomb.

The present structure of the Gothic Church of Santa Maria del Borgo—the Templars' church—dates from the 14th century. The 14th-century parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo houses the Musei sistini del Piceno – Museo di arte sacra di Castignano. The church contains a large 15th-century fresco of the Last Judgment, while the crypt contains frescoes from the school of Carlo and Vittore Crivelli.

The Polo Museale di Arte Sacra e delle Icone opened in 2009. It is housed in an 18th-century palazzo that belonged to the De Scrilli family until the 1970s; its ground-level entrance is accessible to people with disabilities. Outside the designated opening periods, the Musei sistini del Piceno opens on request for €4.00 per person, and a guided tour is possible. The Church of Sant'Egidio also contains a Madonna del Rosario attributed to Simone De Magistris.

Moccoli and historic festivals

The Carnival of Castignano is considered a historic carnival. The Moccoli lanterns are made by local craftspeople, and Castignano has preserved the Moccoli tradition continuously since at least 1861. During the Moccoli procession, the public lighting is switched off; on Piazza San Pietro, it culminates in a traditional battle and a purifying bonfire. Templaria is a historic festival that brings Castignano to life at the end of August.

Hilly landscapes and trails

Castignano lies in a hilly landscape at the foot of Monte Ascensione, at approximately 475 metres above sea level. Suggestive Calanchi—clay formations shaped by erosion—surround the town. The main town contains geological formations known as mud volcanoes, in Italian vulcanelli di fango.

A route leads from the main town of Castignano to the Santuario S. Bernardino and Ripaberarda. At the same time, the alleyways convey the atmosphere of an important and picturesque medieval centre. You can therefore focus your stay on historic sightseeing or include the route from the main town in your personal travel plans.

A distinctive agricultural aspect

The cultivation of anise is also part of Castignano's history: it has been documented in texts since the 15th century. This agricultural connection complements the town's religious, architectural and festive themes. When choosing your hotel in Castignano, you can therefore weigh up whether cultural history, local traditions or the landscape should be your main focus.
