Montalto delle Marche: Museums, History and Panoramic Views

Montalto delle Marche is located in the hills between the Adriatic coast and the Sibillini Mountains. Both the sea and the mountains are about twenty minutes away. The Passeggiata di San Rocco leads to viewpoints with explanatory skyline panels; from there, the view extends across hills, mountains and the sea.

Art and History on Site

The Museo Civico houses numerous archaeological finds from several periods: from the Neolithic around 6000 BC, the Apennine culture around 2500 BC, the Picenian culture from the 7th century BC, the Roman period and later eras. The Pinacoteca civica is located on the top floor of the town hall. It contains a reconstructed study of the architect Giuseppe Sacconi, the creator of the Altare della Patria in Rome.

The Museo Etnografico "L'Acqua, la Terra, la Tela" is housed in the basement of the town hall. It comprises rooms with vaults and arches, an old water well and an underground labyrinth of vaulted passageways. Restored equipment and tools – including mill sails, looms, a cart, ploughs and yokes – provide an insight into work and craftsmanship in earlier times.

The Museo Sistino Vescovile is located in Piazza Sisto V in the former seminary and houses works of art from Montalto as well as from the districts of Porchia and Patrignone. It is currently closed to visitors because the building cannot be used as a result of the most recent earthquakes. Two entrance gates to Montalto delle Marche are well preserved.

The Mulino di Sisto V is one of the rare fortified mill structures in the Marche region. Its existence and operation have been documented since 1320. Grinding stones used to process wheat are still located in the basement. The Monastero di S. Chiara opened in 1631 with the first two nuns from the monastery of the Urbanist nuns of Monte Santo. Life in the Monastero continued until 2019.

On Foot and by E-Bike

The nature trail in the Aso Valley begins at Piazza Sisto V. The e-bike round trip from Montalto delle Marche to Porchia also begins in Montalto and includes stops at wineries, olive mills and craft businesses. Through the Info Point, Montalto offers free e-bike rental; an identity document is required for this.

Regional Specialties

During the experience "Cappelletti in brodo, classico natalizio", meat-filled cappelletti are prepared, a traditional Christmas dish. The tasting of Olive ascolane del Piceno DOP and olive pâté also includes olive creams in various versions served on artisanally produced bread.
