Porchia: Historic Village with Church Art and Hiking Trails

Porchia is a historic village on a narrow ridge. Narrow lanes and preserved remains of the fortification walls characterize the village. Here, you can combine a visit focused on cultural history with hiking, cycling and regional culinary experiences.

Church Art and Fortifications

The Church of Santa Lucia contains an altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child, a work by the painter Vincenzo Pagani. The church crypt also contains a Nativity scene by Giacomo Bonfini, dated to 1515. The construction of Santa Lucia was commissioned by the sister of Pope Sixtus V because of the family’s great veneration for this saint.

The Church of Madonna della Pace can presumably be dated to the 15th century based on its typological features; it was extended and remodeled around the 18th century. It can only be visited on foot via a short but rather steep path; suitable clothing is recommended.

There is evidence of Picenian and Roman necropolises in the Porchia area. The Torrione dates from the 14th century and was renovated in the 15th century. It served as a command tower and coordinated the defense of the village from above.

Hiking, Wine and E-Biking

For active days, the Porchia circular hiking trail has clearly defined specifications: it is 5 km long, has an elevation gain of 200 m, is rated T for tourist hikes, and takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The guided Porchia circular hiking trail follows country roads lined with olive groves and cultivated fields to the Church of Madonna della Pace. The hiking experience also includes a tasting of local products and wines. This trail therefore combines physical activity with an insight into local produce.

The e-bike circular route to Porchia includes stops at wineries, oil mills and local craft businesses. An e-bike circular route from Montalto delle Marche heads toward the Borgo Porchia and passes through the peaceful countryside of the Marche region. This allows you to combine cycling with wine, oil, crafts and landscapes.

Porchia in the Montalto Area

Montalto delle Marche lies in the hills between the Adriatic coast and the Sibillini mountain range; both the sea and the mountains can be reached in about twenty minutes. If you would like to combine Porchia with additional landscape experiences, this means that, alongside the historic village, an area between the coast and the mountain range is also close by.

Porchia’s delegation takes part in the Quintana of Ascoli Piceno every year because Porchia was once a castle belonging to Ascoli Piceno. The three-day Sagra dei Surgitti in Porchia also offers good food and live music.
