Belforte del Chienti combines a well-preserved medieval townscape with religious art, historic buildings and views of the landscape along the Chienti River.

Townscape, Walls and Historic Traces

The medieval layout of Belforte del Chienti has been preserved with its narrow, steep lanes, small squares and surviving extensions. At the same time, views open up across the surrounding landscape, while Belforte del Chienti overlooks the Chienti River. The town is still enclosed by the walls of the 14th-century castle. On the southwestern side of the town walls stands Porta Santa Lucia, a 13th-century gate that served as a secondary entrance.

The historic washhouse is also located near Porta Santa Lucia. For centuries, it was a meeting place and a setting for social exchange among the women of the town.

Churches and Art in Belforte del Chienti

The Church of Sant’Eustachio houses the polyptych by Giovanni Boccati, created in 1468. A polyptych is a multi-panel artwork; together with the Byzantine icon of the Madonna and Child, it forms an important cultural focal point in the town. Those interested in Italian religious art will find two distinct artistic traditions brought together here in one specific place.

The Church of San Pietro Apostolo and the adjoining Monastery of Santa Maria Assunta form an important religious complex in Belforte del Chienti. The monastery was built in the 17th century. The Church of San Giovanni Battista in the hamlet of San Giovanni is also part of the historic townscape: it is a 15th-century church that extends the view beyond the town centre itself.

The Church of San Sebastiano is one of Belforte del Chienti’s historic religious buildings, although it has now been deconsecrated. It houses MIDAC, where cultural events and exhibitions take place. The building thus represents both the town’s historic character and a present-day cultural use, even though its original function no longer continues.

Panoramic Hiking, Events and Regional Products

The panoramic hiking trail leads to the Parco della Memoria di San Sebastiano. The green space offers expansive views of the surrounding landscape.

Messico e Nuvole is part of the local events calendar. The event takes place in Belforte del Chienti every summer over three evenings. With three summer evenings, Messico e Nuvole has a clearly limited timeframe for planning your trip to Belforte del Chienti. Vernaccia is also one of the typical products of the area around Belforte del Chienti.
