Appignano: Ceramics, Churches and the Sentiero del Coppo

Appignano combines a living pottery tradition with churches, medieval traces and a path along the Monocchia. For planning your trip, the town can therefore be explored through concrete experiences, art and landscape: the Scuola di Ceramica offers courses and workshops that are open to everyone. In the “Una giornata al tornio” workshop, participants make a small clay object, which is then fired in a kiln and remains with them as a souvenir. The activity is suitable for all age groups; children aged six and over may take part when accompanied.

Ceramics Tradition in the Museum and Townscape

The Via dei Vasai tells the story of Appignano’s centuries-old ceramics tradition through old kilns, master craftspeople and artistic innovation. At the MArC – Museo dell’Arte della Ceramica, a museum route introduces visitors to Roman ceramic and brick production and displays significant finds from Collina del Sole. The ceramics themes can be encountered at various points in Appignano, both in the townscape and in the museum. The second tour is entitled “Le cocce de Pignà. Il mistero primitivo” and presents Appignano’s tradition of “cocce” and “coccià”. The Opera del Bellente also uses the material: the painted ceramic work depicts Pietro Masi (Bellente), who resisted Napoleon’s conscription.

Churches, Fresco and Fortifications

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista has an 18th-century structure, a Gothic bell tower and preserves traces of the fortifications from 1443. The Chiesa di Santa Tecla houses the Cappella dei Santi and an ornate 19th-century reliquary shrine containing five thousand relics. At the Convento di Forano, part of a 15th-century Annunciation fresco is still visible around an old oak door traditionally associated with Saint Francis. A hospice stood in the area of the Convento di Forano between the 12th and 13th centuries; there were probably also Benedictine settlements there.

Appignano is still surrounded by characteristic town walls today. The Fontana di Borgo XX Settembre provides a distinctive accent: it is decorated with a blue mosaic and colourful ceramic tiles made by Appignano’s master potters. Sculptures, amphorae and jugs make it look like a small open-air gallery. The fountain is accessible by car; free parking spaces and reserved spaces for people with disabilities are available.

A Walk along the Monocchia

The Sentiero del Coppo follows the course of the Monocchia through spontaneous vegetation and past scenic landscapes. The path thus complements the impressions strongly shaped by crafts and architectural heritage with a landscape perspective.
