San Severino Marche combines a multi-layered past with a lively historic centre. At the Museo civico archeologico „Giuseppe Moretti“, visitors can trace the town’s historical and urban development from prehistoric times to the Late Imperial period. Since 2003, the museum has been housed in the former bishop’s palace of Castello al Monte. Its fully accessible visitor route features ramps and a lift.

The Pinacoteca Civica „P. Tacchi Venturi“ has its own particular focus: it preserves works from the 14th to the 17th century. At the MUSET – Museo dell’Elettricità e del Territorio, by contrast, the story ranges from the economic history of the 16th to the 21st century. At the MUSET Borgo Conce site, three former hydroelectric power stations document the industrial development of San Severino Marche.

Septempeda, churches and an exceptional town centre

The Roman past is particularly tangible at Septempeda. Septempeda was a Roman town in the Potenza valley and is ancient San Severino Marche. The visitor route there includes the south-western town gate, a section of the town wall, the thermal complex and kilns used for ceramic production.

Another historical facet is revealed by the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Severino Marche. It was built in 1657, following a reported phenomenon of light in 1584, around an image of the Madonna and Child, and houses richly decorated interiors as well as the remains of beatified people. In the historic centre, urban life revolves around the large, regularly laid-out Piazza del Popolo, an elongated elliptical square with arcades.

The Teatro Feronia at Piazza del Popolo 15 in San Severino Marche (MC) is also part of the town’s cultural landscape. The historic curtain was painted by the artist Raffaele Fogliardi based on a design by Filippo Bigioli and has both artistic and historical significance. This brings the square, theatre history and urban architecture together in a clearly identifiable context.

Festivals, music and routes through the countryside

If you plan your trip around events, San Severino Marche offers several notable points of connection. The Palio dei Castelli has taken place every year on 8 June since 1972. Costumes, sounds, traditional games and gastronomy bring the Renaissance period under the rule of the Smeducci family back to life. The Corsa delle Torri is the final competition of the Palio dei Castelli and has taken place in Piazza del Popolo since 1990.

Since 1991, the San Severino Blues Festival has brought international musicians and bands to San Severino Marche. For active days, the Cammino dei Forti is a hiking route with five stages around eight ancient fortresses. In Canfaito, you can also see a beech tree around 500 years old, considered the largest in the Marche region.
