Discover Treia: Museums, Townscape and Festival Culture
Treia between History, Festival Culture and Landscape
Several distinct aspects of Italian local culture come together in Treia. Piazza della Repubblica features a horseshoe-shaped balustrade and a monument to Pope Pius VI erected in 1785. These are joined by museums, historic buildings, the traditional Disfida del Bracciale and experiences in the landscape of Parco di San Lorenzo. If you would like to combine culture, regional character and activity on your trip, Treia offers various thematic points of connection.
Art and Archaeology in Treia
The Museo Civico Archeologico is housed in the former San Francesco monastery. It preserves fragments of sculptures, architectural elements and inscriptions documenting the development of Roman Trea and its connections with the East, particularly Egypt. The collection also includes the head of Serapis, which belonged to the cult statue of the Serapeum of Trea. The ancient city of Trea was located in the area of the Santuario del Santissimo Crocifisso, two kilometres from the hill on which present-day Treia stands.
The Pinacoteca Comunale is housed in the piano nobile of the Palazzo Comunale. It mainly contains sacred paintings, portraits of members of Treia’s nobility from the 17th and 18th centuries, and works from the Roman and Venetian schools. The Accademia dei Sollevati, which was transformed into the Accademia Georgica dei Sollevati in 1778, provides another link to the area’s cultural history. The Centro Studi Dolores Prato preserves all of Dolores Prato’s works, some original manuscripts, numerous photographs, an extensive press archive, a large portion of her correspondence in digital form and personal belongings.
Townscape and Historic Landmarks
Several individual buildings add to this cultural picture. The Teatro comunale di Treia was recognised as being of particular artistic interest by a decree of the Ministry of Public Education in December 1961. Porta Vallesacco is one of Treia’s seven ancient town gates. The Chiesa di San Filippo houses a wooden crucifix from the 15th century known as the “Cristo della pioggia”. The Palazzina Valadier houses archaeological finds ranging from prehistory to the Late Roman Empire in suitable display cases. The Torre del Mulino in Passo di Treia was given a military function at the end of the 14th century.
Panoramas and Paths through the Marche Landscape
From the Torre dell’Onglavina, the panorama stretches across the Sibillini, the Maiella, Gran Sasso, Conero and the Adriatic Sea. The Santuario del Santissimo Crocifisso is located about one kilometre from Treia, amid the countryside along the provincial road to San Lorenzo. For active days, Parco di San Lorenzo offers trekking and cycling routes as well as views of the Marche landscape. Treia is also located at the centre of the Cammini Lauretani. Calcione di Treia adds a regional culinary perspective: this DOP product is a pastry typical of the Easter season, with sweet outer dough and a savoury filling.
Festival Culture as a Travel Occasion in Its Own Right
The Arena Carlo Didimi is used as a playing field again during the Disfida del Bracciale. The Disfida del Bracciale has taken place in Treia without interruption since 1979 on the first Sunday in August, preceded by ten days of festivities. When choosing accommodation in Treia, you can therefore consider whether the focus of your trip should be on museums and architectural history, on the landscape and walking routes, or on this festive period.
