Visso between the Piazza, Museums and Sibillini Trails

Visso combines a distinctive historic townscape with the mountain world of the Monti Sibillini. At its heart is Piazza Martiri Vissani, surrounded by a unified ensemble of buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries. At the same time, trails and routes offer various ways to experience the landscape on foot or by e-bike.

Historic Centre and Cultural Sites

In the town area, the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Visso recalls the town’s long history; it dates from the 13th century. The museums also have their own focus: the Museo-Pinacoteca Civico e Diocesano and the Museo dei Manoscritti Leopardiani were established and organised in 1972.

In the municipal area of Visso, in the Monti Sibillini at an elevation of around 1,000 metres, lies the Santuario di Macereto. It is considered the most important expression of 16th-century Renaissance architecture in the Marche. Construction began in 1528 and was completed in 1556 under the direction of Filippo Salvi da Bissone. The complex includes the church, the Casa dei Pellegrini, the Casa del Corpo di Guardia and the Palazzo delle Guaite.

Confluence of Valleys and Mountain Surroundings

Visso is the seat of Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini; the national park also extends into the town’s surrounding area. Visso lies at the confluence of five valleys, each of which is traversed by a stream. Monte Fema, a mountain, is located nearby. Monte Cardosa, Monte Cetrognola and Monte Aguzzo are peaks or a mountain in the area around Visso. The landscape can therefore be explored not only through individual viewpoints, but also through the relationship between valleys, high plateaus and mountain ranges.

Hiking on Historic and Scenic Routes

The Anello da Visso a Macereto hiking trail begins in the built-up area of Visso and follows route E7 of Parco dei Sibillini. In part, it runs along the ancient Via della „Madonna di Macereta et Loreto“, which was used by pilgrims travelling to the Santuario di Loreto. The Grande Anello dei Sibillini is 120 kilometres long and encircles the Sibillini mountain range. One section offers extensive views from high plateaus of Monte Bove Nord and the valleys of Visso and Ussita.

There is also a dedicated option for cycling: a two-day e-bike route begins in Visso and crosses the northern side of the Sibillini, with views of Lago di Fiastra. Its first stage starts in the historic centre of Visso and uses a recommended mountain-bike variant of the Grande Anello dei Sibillini. Another section of the Grande Anello begins in the historic centre, passes over the Piani di Macereto high plateau and ends in the small village of Cupi. The different route lengths and starting points help you tailor your hiking and cycling plans to the desired scope of your trip.

Cultural Excursions in the Wider Area

If you would like to extend your stay beyond Visso, the wider regional area includes the Pinacoteca Fortunato Duranti, a museum, the Rocca di Arquata, a castle, and the Eremo di San Leonardo al Volubrio, a church. These destinations complement the local squares, museums and religious buildings with further historical and cultural stops.
