Lunano: History, Nature Trails and Festa della Castagna

Lunano combines historical traces, nature trails, churches and a regional festival tradition. Landscape and Historical Traces

Castello di Lunano is situated on a hill above the confluence of the Mutino stream and the Foglia River. It was founded shortly after the year 1000. The remains of Castello degli Ubaldini are still visible.

Many nature trails in the municipality of Lunano are directly connected with the Parco interregionale del Sasso Simone e Simoncello. The Lunano area also has three lakes where sport fishing is practised. If you would like to combine walks, nature observation and sport fishing, you will find various opportunities to do so in the municipality.

Churches, Monastery and Music

The Chiesa Santi Cosma e Damiano was built in 1889 with three naves and a tall bell tower in the Corinthian style, based on a design by the architect Domenico Giampaoli from Peglio.

The Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine dates back to the 17th century, is located in the heart of the borgo and has a small bell tower with an old bell. It is venerated during the celebration of the Virgin Mary.

The restored Conventino di Monte Illuminato complex includes large parts of the monastery, a bell tower and a chapel with an umbrella vault.

The Antico Organo di Pietro Nachini dates from between 1765 and 1775 and was built for the monastery church of San Francesco of the Padri Minori Osservanti in Fano. It is located above the entrance to the parish church. The restored and fully functional organ is used during celebrations.

Routes for Nature and Active Days

The Sentiero del Beato Lando is an environmental and biodiversity trail that begins at Castello di Lunano and reaches Pietrafagnana di Pietrarubbia. Along the route, 100 markers identify plant and flower species by their scientific name, common name and flowering period. Six rest areas and information signs about old villages complement the route.

The Convento francescano di Monte Illuminato is connected to Parco Sasso Simone e Simoncello by a trail. In summer, this trail can be used on foot, by mountain bike and on horseback, and in winter with snowshoes and cross-country skis.

Lunano is one of the municipalities included in the Bike Tour alta valle del Metauro e del Foglia. The cycling loop is more than 270 km long and comprises four circuits that differ in difficulty and elevation gain.

Festa della Castagna

The Festa della Castagna takes place every year on the third weekend of October. Scenes from rural life are reenacted in the streets and squares of Lunano. Traditional dishes made with chestnuts in various recipes are also served.
