Historic Centre and Churches

Pergola’s historic centre preserves tower houses, pointed-arch portals and the distinctive Porta del Morto. Pergola Cathedral was built in 1258 by the Augustinian Order as the Church of Saint Augustine. After alterations and extensions in the 17th and 18th centuries, it acquired its present Baroque and Neoclassical appearance.

The cathedral also contains a crucifix painted on a poplar panel in the 14th century, attributed to Mello da Gubbio. The Church of Saint Vitalis was built at the end of the 14th century and completely remodelled and extensively rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century. It houses the sacred furnishings used in the Good Friday procession.

Museums and Art in Pergola

The Pergola Museum of Gilt Bronzes houses the Gilt Bronzes, considered the only surviving group of Roman gilded bronze statues. In addition to the Teatro Angel Dal Foco, the Sala dell’Abbondanza houses a large installation by the artist Walter Valentini, who was born in Pergola. Historic Art Sites in the Surrounding Area

The Chapel of the Magi was part of the former Romanesque-Gothic Church of Saint Peter. It has a marble altar with an Adoration of the Magi by Aurelio Lomi of Pisa. The Oratory of the Assumption in Palazzolo dates from the 15th century. Visits to the oratory are possible only by prior reservation; the Museum of Gilt Bronzes should be contacted at least one day in advance.

Festivals, Chocolate and Regional Specialities

Cioccovisciola 2025 was Pergola’s festival of chocolate and Visciolato. It took place from 6 December to 8 December 2025 in the town centre and has brought this festival to life there for years. Cioccovisciola includes demonstrations by master chocolatiers, markets and stalls selling high-quality handicrafts. The 28th National Fair of Pergola’s Precious White Truffle and Typical Products was also scheduled for the first three Sundays in October 2025.

Pergola Medievale, a historical reenactment of the arrival in Pergola of the relics of Saints Secondo, Agabito and Giustina, was announced for Friday, 21 August 2026.
