The Chiesa di Santa Maria in Calafria is mentioned in documents from 1290. Its original structural elements date from the 13th century, while the church was remodeled in the 17th century. Inside is the painting L’Assunta from 1714, a work by the painter Domenico Giannotti, who came from Urbino. The different periods of construction give this sacred building a multifaceted artistic and architectural-historical character.

Other Churches and Religious Art

The Edicola della Madonna dei Sodi was renovated in 1996. It houses a ceramic copy of the image of the Madonna dei Sodi, which is venerated there. The Oratorio della S.S. Concezione is still preserved, but is no longer used for religious services. The two sites thus represent different forms of religious remembrance and present-day use.

The Chiesa di Gallo was built in 1956. The same church contains a depiction of the Crucifixion from the 17th century. The Chiesa di San Martino is the oldest church in Petriano and is mentioned in a document from 1069. Its main altar features the painting S. Martino e S. Giovanni Battista by Luigi Scorraro.

The Chiesa di S. Giovanni Battista di Riceci is also clearly dated: it dates from 1779. Its terracotta façade design recalls certain works created at that time in the ducal city by the architect Giuseppe Tosi, who came from Urbino. Together with Petriano’s older churches, this building broadens the view across different periods and forms of sacred architecture.

The Apsa Watercourse

The Apsa watercourse is also part of Petriano’s landscape: it crosses the Petriano area. This means that your stay can be viewed not only through its buildings and thermal offerings, but also through the landscape formed by the course of the water.
