Castelbottaccio: Historic Town Center, Trails and Panoramic Views

Castelbottaccio combines a varied landscape with a historic town center and impressive sacred and stone details. If you would like to combine walks, longer hikes and culture, you will find ancient trails, viewpoints, churches and traces of different eras here.

Landscape Between Hills and Panoramic Views

The Castelbottaccio area is crossed by the Tratturo Celano-Foggia. The historic transhumance route, approximately 208 kilometers long, once connected the summer pastures in Abruzzo with the winter pastures in Apulia. From Colle Iannone, the highest point in the area at 717 meters, views extend across the Matese area and the Biferno Valley to the Adriatic; on clear days, the Tremiti Islands can also be seen.

Around Castelbottaccio, oak forests, areas of forage crops, gentle hills, green pastures, badlands, small gorges and ancient trails alternate with one another. According to the municipality, the excursions are suitable for different levels of difficulty—from easy walks to longer trekking tours.

Hikes with Different Paces

A recommended circular walk through the historic center leads to five construction phases, towers, walls and small gorges. The complete walk on foot is estimated to take two days. Another recommended trail follows the old road toward Santa Giusta, passes through the rural landscape and leads to rural religious sites; four hours are indicated for the round trip.

A route along the old road to the Biferno River explores the river landscape. The round trip takes one day and is suitable for experienced hikers in good physical condition.

Santa Giusta and Its History

The Santa Giusta hill, located about two kilometers from the town, lies at an elevation of around 650 meters and covers approximately three hectares. It offers a broad panorama and is also regarded as a place of great peace and spirituality. The Chiesa di Santa Giusta is surrounded by greenery, and there is a picnic area nearby.

Santa Giusta has a complex history: during the Samnite period, it was probably the site of a cult place dedicated to Hercules. In Roman times, a villa was built there, followed later by a cell for Basilian monks and use by hermits.

Churches, Crosses and Stone Details in the Town

The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie is a Baroque, three-aisled church with an irregular floor plan and a stone structure. It preserves three wooden statues: Santa Lucia by Crescenzo Ranallo from Oratino, dating from 1841; the Madonna delle Grazie by Giacomo Colombo, dating from 1694; and San Giuseppe by Silverio Giovannitti from Oratino, dating from 1780. The building was originally a Norman oratory; it was consecrated for worship in May 1178 and reopened after restoration in 1999.

The Cappella di Sant'Oto is a single-aisled church made of white stone, with a simple façade and a small bell gable. It was opened for worship in April 1899 and rebuilt in 1989. The Croce Stazionaria is a stone cross of historical and artistic interest. Over time, it was moved several times within the town and appears to have been reassembled from elements originating in different contexts; its original form is therefore difficult to determine.

The Morgia Corvara is also known as Morgia Curvata and is a large limestone outcrop of whitish calcarenite that served as a resource for craftsmen and stonemasons. From 1900 onward, new stone portals were created in Castelbottaccio, including on Corso Umberto I°, Via Vittorio Emanuele III, Via XXIV Maggio and Piazza della Vittoria. Around the Palazzo Baronale dei Cardone there was a walled garden, a water-filled moat and a drawbridge.
