Campobasso combines impressive art, religious traditions, historic churches, and unusual green spaces to create a multifaceted urban experience. Between Castello Monforte, museums, frescoes, and the San Giovanni dei Gelsi street-art district, you will encounter different sides of the city.
Museums and the tradition of the Misteri
A special cultural landmark is the Museo dei Misteri. It displays the mechanical “Ingegni” created by Paolo Saverio di Zinno. In the main room, the Sala degli Ingegni “Cosmo Teberino,” you can view thirteen “bare” machines with their structural and artistic features. The museum also has two exhibition halls and a screening room.
The Misteri also shape Campobasso as a living tradition. On Corpus Christi Sunday, thirteen procession machines carried on the shoulders of bearers make their way through the streets. The sculptor Paolo Saverio Di Zinno designed and created them in the mid-18th century. Another religious procession takes place every year on May 31: the highly venerated statue of the Virgin Mary from the Santuario di Santa Maria del Monte is carried through the streets.
Historical connections can be explored in greater depth at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale. It was founded in 1881 and has been housed and open to visitors in the Palazzo Mazzarotta since 1995. The collection ranges from prehistory to the Middle Ages and has a strong focus on Samnite finds. The archaeological materials include, among other things, objects from Campomarino, Guglionesi, Larino, Sepino, Campochiaro, and Castello Monforte.
Churches, frescoes, and cityscapes
The Chiesa di San Giorgio was built in the 14th century. Its frescoes depict Church Fathers, Evangelists, and scenes from Genesis. The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate, in turn, was converted into a church in 1572 by the Congrega delle Maestranze from an oratory located outside the city walls. Inside, it preserves works by Francesco Guarino da Solofra, Scipione Cecere, Paolo Saverio Di Zinno, Amedeo Trivisonno, and Leo Paglione.
The Teatro Savoia is also noteworthy for its design. The theater was built between 1923 and 1925. The entrance area, foyer, and ceiling above the auditorium are decorated with frescoes by Arnaldo De Lisio from 1925.
Modern art is particularly visible in the San Giovanni dei Gelsi district. The district has been transformed into an open-air museum of street art. A street-art trail dedicated to the traditional Misteri festival has also been created there.
Gardens and green spaces in Campobasso
Villa De Capoa combines the characteristics of a botanical garden and a city villa. Its park is home to, among other trees, tall sequoias, mighty cedars of Lebanon, cypresses, Norway spruces, and lime trees. The garden of the Convitto Nazionale Mario Pagano was laid out at the end of the 19th century and contains rare species such as the giant sequoia, Ginkgo biloba, and cedar of Lebanon.
Another green urban space is Parco Eduardo De Filippo. It is the most significant green area in the San Giovanni district and features diverse plantings with numerous tree species. It also has a playground, sports facilities, and works of contemporary art.
In summer, Parco Eduardo De Filippo hosts the Festival Nazionale del Teatro Popolare e della Tradizione.
Walks and practical orientation
Below Castello Monforte, you can walk through Campobasso along narrow, rustic roads on the hillside and via stairways. These routes make the city’s topographical character an immediate part of the walk. Castello Monforte serves both as a historic landmark and as a starting point for finding your way through the adjoining streets.
Campobasso railway station has a bus stop, bicycle parking, cycle paths, parking for cars and motorcycles, and charging stations for electric vehicles. The station has three tracks for passenger services and offers assistance for people with disabilities or reduced mobility.
A distinctive taste of the city
One of the culinary specialties is L’Abatina, a particularly spicy De.Co. product. After being filled, the sausage is placed under a press, which gives it a flat shape even when served.
