Montagano between Charter and Landscape

Montagano combines a historic charter with churches, festivals and routes in the surrounding area. The Pergamena Montaganese, issued in August 1039 by the Princes of Benevento, Pandolfo III and Pandolfo IV, proves that Montagano was already constituted as a free municipality at that time.

Churches and Historic Traces

Next to Santa Maria di Faifoli once stood a Benedictine monastery dating from 1134, which has now disappeared. The Chiesa dell’Immacolata, also known as the Congrega, was built in the 17th century by the lay confraternity of the Most Holy Name of Mary.

From Fagifulae to the Madonna della Transumanza

A hypothesis regarded as fairly well-founded connects Montagano with the ancient Roman municipium of Fagifulae, which Pliny mentions in Book III of his Naturalis Historia. The Complesso Badiale di Santa Maria di Faifoli houses a statue of the Madonna della Transumanza made entirely of wood. It depicts the Virgin Mary resting on an oak trunk with two angels. The Palazzo Marchesale Janigro is one of Montagano’s attractions.

Bosco La Difesa and the Tratturo

A prominent tratturo runs through Bosco La Difesa, recalling historic caravans. The forest served as a place of refuge and protection for brigands.

Festivals with Religious and Historical Connections

The festival of the Madonna della Transumanza, known in the town as the Madonna Incoronata, takes place on the last Sunday in April. It includes a public auction; the winner is given the honor of carrying the statue in the procession. At an event in Montagano, the town’s history is portrayed through historically themed activities in the village, entertainment, theatrical performances, music and art. For an April visit, the last Sunday of the month marks the fixed date of the Madonna festival.

The Montagano (Chiesa Faifoli)–Limosano stage leads from the church northwestward along a paved municipal road into the valley; after a few hundred meters, it turns left onto a mule track leading to a ford on the Biferno River.
